And now the end is near .....growing old

Anything goes in The Snug, General Discussion's rebellious little brother. An off-topic den of iniquity where any subject not covered elsewhere may be discussed. Well, anything except golf, Star Wars and Arsenal.

At almost 51, I can confirm that stretch jeans are a godsend

Contemplating switching back to y-fronts to stop the dangly bits getting twisted and being sat on.

Still don’t know why record companies use such tiny small print on the back of CDs and use silly colours like yellow writing on a green background- or even worse - orange on red.

And it’s always a marvel when I song I actually know gets to number 1 (thanks Kate!) rather than the nonsensical drivel that’s out now.

My god. I got talked into playing 2 cricket matches at the weekend. I normally just play Saturday but there was a Sunday game at an away club I really like.

Saturday field 40 overs. Open batting last about 8 overs

Sunday field 40 overs. Bat number 6, score 48 in about 20 overs

Monday. Agony. Legs gone, stiff as a board, feel utterly exhausted. Zero energy.

Tuesday. Still shattered, still aching, slowest cycle home ever.

Never again. Now I know why people retire at 35.....

Until you've actually played Cricket, people think it's just a load of standing around but at our age it really takes it out on you. I played wicket keeper and worked out that in a 50 over match, you did the equivalent of 300 squats. No wonder I could barely walk on Mondays after a game. Add that to all the other pulls and tears from muscles that you've not used for a while. I think my cricketing days are over now sadly.

I got talked into playing as wicket keeper recently. Like you, I could not walk the day after and broke a finger into the bargain. One of the bowlers was a bit rapid and the gloves had seen better days!

Definitely too old for this ****

To add insult to injury on Sunday, we had a load of our colts playing, who I manage in my junior teams. One lads parents I get on really well with, our daughters are going to the same school, and they were there watching.

So while I'm manfully covering the boundary between long on and cow they were near me sleeping in their deckchairs in the sun.

I gave them both barrels at tea.

Years ago when I was about 25 and working on various road sites one of the supervisors stepped aside for an older plump middle aged woman. When she passed he said she's a bit of alright.

We gave him a right load of stick. I was actually thinking ugh how could he.

Anyway I'm heading towards mid fifties and I reckon I would be thinking the same as he did now. Just keep it to myself if young chaps about.

When someone passes the first thing I look for is their age and then what they died of which is not that often included in news papers and BBC news online. I know a couple in there mid 90's who have been married for seventy plus years. one was unwell recently (now recovered) and the other went to pieces.

The worrying thing is, when you walk down the street and see a really fit looking woman, you think "I wonder what her mum looks like?" :smiler:

This year, so far I’ve gone off pizza and tea.

I no longer can enjoy a cup of tea and now only drink it out of routine. Has anyone else gone off something they used to enjoy.

On a physical note three of my toes no longer bend.

Getting old sucks. I’m 41

Went off a lot of processed food, including 'take away' pizza long ago cos like so much else it's loaded with sugar.
And one of my toes went 'arched caterpillar' and is never going to move
