Because they have no competition in that area, when Portsmouth imploded they took the best youth products and with Portsmouth languishing in League one and having money issues for the last ten years or so they've basically had free pickings to that area, you can't compare a Southampton to a team in London or even Manchester.

They don't just get local players though. Walcott is from Stanmore & Bale from Cardiff.

They have a good scouting system in place.

That was 20 odd years ago.

The Premier League rules have changed greatly. You can only have players in your academy who reside within a certain distance from your club. Hence we have to compete furiously to get decent players against the the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham etc

At the risk of a paddlin' for straying off topic from Sonny Perkins, where is this Southampton academy that is leaps and bounds ahead of ours?

Had a look through their squad and their transfers for the last ten years and I can see JWP & Luke Shaw that have come through their academy and ended up playing at a level where we'd be interested in them.

Bale, Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain is a fairly decent output in recent times as well. But other than that.

Tella and Stephens both joined them at 17 so I don't think they count.

Bottom line is, if these youngsters in our youth teams are not making it, then our youth recruitment is not very good.

True, but our population density far outstrips theirs.

thats not always the case , some players never kick on from 14 years old -18 and never make the top grade, some of the players we've had were hpt property at 14-18 , they just never made the top grade .

People are also missing Southampton when some of these players come through were coming through League One, Championship back through to the Premiership so far easier to come through, Chamberlain's two seasons were in League One, Bale's two seasons were in the Championship. Using them as examples is no relevant to us as a comparison.

We’ve got 2 of our products regularly turning out in our first team. Looking at other clubs at our level that’s probably about average.

Kialos wrote: Sat Jul 02, 2022 12:00 pm I saw Wayne Rooney come on in a PL game against us when he was 16/17. That's a generational striking talent, not Sonny Perkins. Pretty sure Moyes was his manager at the time so I think he knows a thing or two about the subject.

Anyway Perkins does not want to stay for whatever reason and the club want to make sure they get as much compensation as possible, which is what the statement is all about. There can be a whole host of speculation or recrimination but that's the bottom line.

I do agree they should have left out the "world class academy" BS in the statement though, that definitely has a whiff of the boardroom about it.
I have to agree with you

We haven't lost a generational talent...we may have lost a player who goes on to become a solid Premier League player but even those odds arent that high that he will be that

No hard feelings...good luck to him. He's apparently joined his boyhood club so you cant knock that

Good luck to the lad in the future.

I do wonder what the reaction is going to be when Declan Rice decides it's time to move on or see' his contract out so he can leave on a free.

And then in the internet era the ones we’ve let go and had millions of pages of why oh why only for them to end up eeking out a career at the likes of Gillingham
We didn’t let sonny perkins go though, he left us after we offered him a pro contract. So surely the better comparisons are the likes of John terry, Kieran Richardson, and (I think) sol campbell.

Meh.

Good luck to him, it is a job at the end of the day and if he thinks he can get a higher paying employer who are we to argue? Chances are he is out of football or playing in the lower leagues in a few years, like the vast majority of premier league academy players at all clubs.

Not really. Not every youth team player makes a living out of football, a lot don’t even play at non league level once they move on.

Anyway Perkins is only going for more money. Another one with an agent with delusions of wages above their performances to date.
How is he going to progress any better at Spurs? Give it a couple of seasons and if he is lucky he’ll be leading the line for Orient.

Conte certainly won't use him, that's for sure. How long Conte stays is anyone's guess obviously

they will probably sell him on in a few years for 20m after a few appearances in the cups. we rarely get good money for our players.

shame he wasnt more level headed and bided his time with us. we shall see if he has made the right move or will he be at watford next year ?
