Leeds has a massive Irish contingent, too.Greatest Cockney Rip Off wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 11:56 am Do the London areas of Kilburn, Cricklewood, Neasden and Harlsden mean anything to you? Huge Irish areas of London as well as Camden Town and Tottenham.
Also Birmingham and Luton had huge Irish communities too. You have to remember Ireland in the 40s, 50s and 60s really had nothing to offer the general population much in the way of employment so the UK and America were the destinations for young people at the time.
Understandable, Cork people usually prefer Murphy's which is brewed in Cork and has a sweeter taste than Guinness.
In short, they came to wherever they were needed to build the road and rails...or even dig the canals.

Re: Where Were You Grandparents Born?
I think another aspect is that the population of Greater London is more than the combined populations of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Manchester AND Liverpool so the Irish contingent don't stand out as much as it does in other places.
London is, along with New York, the most multi cultural city on the planet.
Add to that that West Ham was traditionally a white Working class club of which Irish ancestry is/was a major part.

6 out of 8 great grand parents are Irish but not good enough for a Brexit busting passport.

Wasn’t that on the back of Del Boy’s Robin Reliant?
I’m Welsh born but out of an English woman’s body. Dad was as Welsh as they came and Mum a Manc from Cockney parents. I consider myself a Welsh Mancunian.

Admit it Jim, you're half Cockney, mate..btajim - mcfc wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 8:30 pm Wasn’t that on the back of Del Boy’s Robin Reliant?
No, that was words from the song. 'Pop Music' by 'M'.
Del's Reliant Regal (not Robin) Supervan II or III, had New York, Paris & Peckham on the side & back of it.

Re: Where Were You Grandparents Born?
Mum’s Manc to Cockneys and dad was Welsh. I only moved to Manchester itself in my late teens. I lived in London for longer.
I’ll stay where I am for a while with a plan to wind life down in Wales. I’d live there now but it’s just too slow.
