I wonder just how much of our problems are down to a simple lack of application.
They said on TV the other day that we were 19th in the table for sprints. No wonder we are crap on the counter.
We are also 18th for possession, making those sprint stats look even more daunting.

But 2nd for interceptions and 6th for expected goals against. The defensive approach is deliberate and working. The other end not so much!

I remember a stat a few seasons ago which said that we were the fastest counter attacking team in the league. But that was when lingard was here.

A few things stood out.

We're 3rd in the league for number of crosses but 18th in the league for cross accuracy. Why is that? Are we crap at crossing the ball? Are we not getting enough players into the box? (if that was the case, why are we even crossing it?). Is it due to a lack of good movement in the box and our players are being marked easily?

Another thing that stood out was the fact we're bottom of the league for successful dribbles per game. Last 2 seasons before this, we were 16th. Do we have a lack of players that can comfortable carry the ball forward and past players? Or is dribbling deemed as risky and the players urged not to take such action?

Also I've noticed a bit of a pattern when it comes to the right-hand side...

Out ball retention is worse on the right.
Chances created from open play is poor on the right (0.9 chances created per 90 from Bowen and Coufal combined).
Cross success much worse from the right.
Shots from the right hand side very low. Only 9% of our attempts are from the right - lowest figure in the league.

Nice analysis BH 👍 the comparison to league 'best' was what I was interested in particularly, thanks for that (although I'm sure we all knew that we are unlikely to rank very highly in key stats currently)

these stats make interesting reading but do they tell us the players are not giving100%, are the tactics or set up wrong, high on crosses low on finding our player does that mean the crosses are poor or the one up front is hard to pick out, have other teams got us sussed and we need a different approach. It is all very negative at the moment and the international break just makes it longer, on current form the world cup will be just a winter holiday for most of our squad

Some ball carrying stats...

Our top 5 progressive ball carriers (based on number of yards forward progressed per 90 minutes) are (best to worst):

Lanzini (153.6 yards)
Benrahma (147.4 yards)
Rice (133.9 yards)
Emerson (117.5 yards)
Coufal (87.9 yards)

* Lanzini and Emerson have yet to reach the equivalent of 2 games played so their stats should be taken with a pinch of salt

Just checked and it seems we never ranked high as a team for tackles and pressing - or at least not in the previous 2 seasons.

Stats such as number of touches, number of passes, number of presses, and number of tackles have been consistently low although they have slightly declined this season (so far) when worked out per 90 mins. It does look as though our strategy hasn't really changed though. Sit back, wait for the mistake, then counter quickly using the minimum of passes.

What has declined significantly so far this season (although its early days yet) is Expected Assists per 90, Expected Goals per 90, Shots On Target per 90

Expected Assists per 90
20/21: 0.97
21/22: 0.93
22/23: 0.58

Expected Goals (non penalty) per 90:
20/21: 1.42
21/22: 1.31
22/23: 0.89

Shots on Target per 90:
20/21: 4.16
21/22: 3.76
22/23: 2.86

Of course this is skewed by the fact we've only played a few games and that's already included Tottenham, Chelsea, Man City, and our bogey team, Brighton. Hopefully the figures will start to look better after another 6 games!

The front 4 really need to start clicking again though.

If I thought Expected Goals was bad enough, we now have Expected Assists!

Look forward to Expected Losses, followed by Expected Farts in the Boardroom. 📉 :thdn:
