He seems to be under the impression that he can do everything else.
Harry Kane scores plenty of goals for Spurs. That's why he gets picked. Why not play to his strengths?

It’s getting tiresome to watch under Southgate. He’s running out of ideas. This Saka as LWB just does not work.
The travelling fans are not happy and booed him at the end when he went over to them. Don’t blame them.

England midfielder Declan Rice speaking to Channel 4: "It's obviously disappointing. Every tournament we go into, we set out to win. In the Nations League we have slipped below our standards but I didn't think it was all bad tonight.

"It's coming. It was a much better performance tonight than we saw in the summer.

"It's not that we're not creating the chances. I see it in training. There are goals for fun.

"Trust me, we are going to be good."
Could he keep a straight face saying that?

Post update

Italy 1-0 England

Gareth Southgate went to applaud the England fans who have travelled to Italy tonight - and there were some very audible boos.
Those are the very worst kind of boos.

BBC put up an Upson quote of 'they weren't pulling off each other', now rephrased to 'they weren't creating that space'

Not sure it can be considered nepotism to pick Dier. He hasn't picked him for 20 months!

It's still there:- (21:55)
Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I thought the distances and the angles especially in wide areas weren't quite right. They weren't pulling off each other in the right angles and creating that space. The movement wasn't there.

I wonder what game Southgate was watching.

very even, more shots than them, just didn't make it work in the final third. oh and when questioned about not including Toney, he's new to the squad, needs time to learn the way we're playing, so we went with the group that have been playing together.

bugger me just like listening to Moyes.........

As soon as Grealish came on, things looked much better. England are crying out for some creativity and someone who can put their foot on the ball and be positive but Southgate prioritises cautiousness over everything else. He’s very similar to Moyes in that regard.

Bellingham and Rice look good in the middle - they need to start in the WC for me. The problems are elsewhere and mostly in defence. Saka is not a wing back and constantly left gaps which Maguire/Rice had to cover. Walker was very poor with their goal, he should never have let him turn back inside. James offered surprisingly little going forward.

Foden is wasted as a winger too. He’s best with the ball at his feet and playing off other quality players.

Lastly, Kane was exceptionally greedy at least twice when he should have played another forward in. He does it most games for England but he seems to be above criticism. It’s infuriating.

My team for WC:

———————— Pickford ———————
Trippier — Stones — White/Tomori — Alexander-Arnold
———— Bellingham — Rice ————
Sterling/Saka ——— Foden ——— Grealish
————————— Kane —————————

Will we concede more? Possibly. But if we continue our form we’re going out of the groups with a whimper - at least that team will score a few and be progressive.

I personally think that there'll be more teams than just us, going out of the group stages with little more than a whimper. Sad to say it, but I have zero interest in this WC regardless of who wins it!!!
