He could always do what Kalvin Phillips has done and give up his playing career in return for some trophies.Vic_Watson wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 4:41 pm You have to feel sorry for Dec. Playing turgid, functional football at club level and turgid, functional football with England.

He does seem to have got over his obsession of directing traffic which used to really annoy me.Vic_Watson wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 4:41 pm You have to feel sorry for Dec. Playing turgid, functional football at club level and turgid, functional football with England.
Re: Declan Rice
Declan is getting some stick from a lot of other club supporters, things like over rated , not worth 50 mil, up himself, the rubbish that comes with playing for England, A lot digging him for speaking up after the match, which should have been the manager and captains role. lets hope playing for his country does not affect him as a person and player.

Re: Declan Rice
I feel more sorry for people that use the word turgid, when really they mean tepid - because no definition of turgid fits the context in which it is frequently used on this forum and elsewhere...Vic_Watson wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 4:41 pm You have to feel sorry for Dec. Re: Declan Rice
that misuse is not just on this site, it seems to be across football - but I always thought people really meant torpid "lacking in energy or vigor" .

Re: Declan Rice
Tepid does mean lacking in enthusiasm, among other definitions, so it could be either.
Unlike turgid, which is:
adjective
1.swollen and distended or congested.
"a turgid and fast-moving river"
2. (of language or style) tediously pompous or bombastic.
"some turgid verses on the death of Prince Albert"
Similar:
bombastic, pompous, overblown, overripe, inflated, high-flown...

turgid

/ˈtɜː.dʒɪd/ US
/ˈtɝː.dʒɪd/
turgid adjective (TOO SERIOUS)
formal
(of speech, writing, style, etc.) boring and too serious about its subject matter:
a couple of pages of turgid prose
Thesaurus: synonyms, antonyms, and examples
not interesting or exciting
boring - That was such a boring film I nearly fell asleep during it.
excruciating - She went over the plot of the book in excruciating detail.
deadly - His latest film was just deadly. I left after the first hour!
mind-numbing - The incident was described in a mind-numbing, 400-page report so dense that no one read it.
I make it spot on from the Cambridge Dictionary.

Thing is though, we have no choice but to read your turgid stuff day in and day out Vic, so you're getting off lightlyVic_Watson wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 10:18 pm The grammar police are out again, I see. Very turgid people (sense 2).

Re: Declan Rice
I think the word they're looking for is torpid, but it's rarely used. But, as language has always done, it evolves with use.

Re: Declan Rice
Torpid, functional football doesn't have the same ring to it. I'm sticking with turgid. Especially as it annoys certain elements!

Re: Declan Rice
Yes, I never use it in my match reports because it isn't a particularly pleasant sounding word, and its use is rare enough that it would just distractVic_Watson wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 11:36 pm Torpid, functional football doesn't have the same ring to it. Re: Declan Rice
How about just **** and functional? That perfectly describes our current football being served up of late.
