Why is the government discount on electricity rather than gas? My gas prices will increase more than my electric.
Because one price sets the other. Bad outdated system
Gas has risen dramatically but electric not so much because renewables provide a lot of it . Unfortunately at the moment it's tied to the cost of gas
Electric also some people use for heating and have no gas at all so covers everyone

Thanks Yorks, just read an article which states that the standing order reduction will save on average £12 a year. No idea how accurate that is, am lousy at maths.
Apart from that, when you say you'll be paying less, is that because of the £400 government hand out?
Yeah, basically - I fully expected my bill to stay the same after the discount was applied, so it would be increase by something like £60-£70. But as it's not (immediately, at least) I'll actually get the financial benefit of that hand out.
Mate swore by them, heating a ground floor flat, but I've heard plenty of -ve things about them. Worth speaking to a few heating engineers, I'd guess, but I'd bet you won't get a consensus.
Because there's no reliance on convection, nothing that isn't directly visible to the rads won't get warm. Not a problem if your furniture arrangement suits it, but it's (supposedly) common to get cold spots in rooms behind chairs, cabinets and suchlike, which isn't necessarily an issue in the short term, but can lead to damp and other problems related to a persistent lack of warmth. Again, this could well be apocryphal, but I'd be inclined to get as much information as I can from impartial sources before you consider them.

That's a tentative + for me. My office takes ages to warm up and it seems a waste of resources. Thinking of putting one of these above my desk so the heat is directed just at the desk area. Though I take your point about damp.
Told by a friend who has one that it's like standing in the sunshine in terms of how the heat hits you.
Mine had a little run again today. My thermostat is set to 15c at the mo, and it came on on its own.
I'm reading that the most efficient way to use heating is to turn it on once, have your thermostat set to a temperature, and just leave it on. Is this correct? Because the articles I've read have said that by having it on timer is least efficient way to use it.
I’ve heard that but I don’t do it with ours because I don’t want the heating coming on when we’re in bed at night, so I use the timer, it’s on in the morning for an hour or two and again in the evening, thermostat set to 19’.

Any clever-clogs that can enlighten me?
Strangely enough I studied this at length quite sometime ago. Most stated that using constant heat like that wasn't a good idea, there again others said the opposite.
Certainly at night it's surely better to turn it off.
In summary, I ain't got a clue.

I'd looked into this last year when we got a new boiler.
There isn't much in it, and with the amount of variables (including insulation, room sizes etc.), by the time you work out what suits your individual setup, you might as well just go with whatever is more convenient.
Received post Oct rates from SSE today. Last year Gas & Elec bills totalled approx £800 for 3 bed semi. Prediction for this year will be £1750 ish less the £400 Govt discount so not as bad as it could've been
it was a little fresh this morning, eldest (5) loves to wake up when I get up for earlies (5am) so rather than risk waking the twins I just take her downstairs with me and get her to do my jobs lol (thats what kids are for right?)
anyways I may start putting the HVACs on (living room and kitchen) for a few hours before they get up, get the room nice and toasty for them.
