To be honest we've found that Aldi isn't really any cheaper than Tesco. Lidl is the best place to go. Like YH says too it depends a lot on what you buy. Some stuff has barely gone up, some has gone up by a lot. One example, and I know its hardly a staple ingredient (unless you're Delia Smith) but jarred capers used to be about a quid a jar, the other day I saw some for £2.45.Tenbury wrote: ↑Thu Oct 06, 2022 5:54 am I only ever shop at Aldi or Lidl( back in more lucrative times they were the best place to buy the sort of Mediterranean stuff my kids like, now they're just cheap!).
I've no idea where this figure of a 10%rise in inflation comes from, from the evidence of my own eyes and debit card, it's a fact that basic food prices have risen far, far higher than that.

Re: Cost of living crisis
Mostly I buy staples (I've got time to cook), sugar aside, they've gone up massively... Milk £1.09 > £1.30, Butter £1.40>£1.90+
Bread flour 48p > 65p, even frigging baked beans (essential for any proper breakfast ) 26p>38p.
Cant be arsed to work out the %s, but it's a great deal more than 10%..
[ send, capers (my lot like puttenesca,) try Home Bargains bottles for <a quid.]
F*ck me, is this Mumsnet?

Re: Cost of living crisis
Coincidentally I bought a jar of capers for the first time ever on Monday, they were an essential throw in ingredient for pan fried bass, not sure they made that much difference to be honest.sendô wrote: ↑Thu Oct 06, 2022 8:43 am To be honest we've found that Aldi isn't really any cheaper than Tesco. Fish, now there's an item that's gone up, especially cod.......

I seen an old mate from work the other day. Family man but hard drinking, out with the boys type. Organises steam fayres and is a bit of muscle.
After a quick catch up he asked me what I was paying for gas and electricity. Never ever mentioned that sort of thing in the ten years I've known him.

A box of 30 cod fingers - £7.50
I've just charged my earphones at work though, so that's covered the cost

The fun pubs near me are getting emptier by the week. If COVID didn’t batter the industry then this will. They rarely, if ever, open again.

Re: Cost of living crisis
To get more Mumsnet about it, I noticed that the oat milk I buy in Lidl has gone up recently, 89p a carton now (used to be at least 10p cheaper, I think). They also seem to have less and less of it in stock, empty shelves often.
Also, because you mention it Tenbury - Home Bargains near me has the excellent Nigerian import Guinness in at the moment. I don't drink much, but a Guinness now and again is a little treat for me and that stuff is outstanding.

You've piqued my interest now. I'll have to check this Nigerian Guinness out.YorksHammer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 06, 2022 11:59 am Also, because you mention it Tenbury - Home Bargains near me has the excellent Nigerian import Guinness in at the moment. Re: Cost of living crisis
Wrong thread!
Anyway as for the quoted 10% inflation, I assume there must be some items which are dragging down that percentage.
Does anyone know if they publish the calculation or state what goods are included?

They talked about buying a gilet, and pronounced it ''gillay'' rather than the 'proper' gilet.
