Games set in London

Post by Whitters »

Following on from the 'Fallout London' topic, it got me thinking of games that are set in our home city. Personally I love playing games in familiar settings and marvel at the attention to detail. Games that spring to mind:

Watch Dogs: Legion set in the near future and much of Central London has been replicated in here. Lots of small details of buildings, monuments, off-the beaten track backstreets, etc that I'm very familiar with that amazes me the amount of work that must have gone into this. Sometimes I spend more time exploring than actually playing the objectives.

Assassins Creed Syndicate set in Victorian London, has a great Sherlock Holmes type atmosphere as gives a good insight of how the city used to look. Lots of 'fun facts' when discovering new areas and buildings so can be quite educational as well

Zwift bike training app that has a map of Central London amongst others. Nice to cycle round the city without the danger of getting smacked by an Uber driver doing a sudden u-turn, and makes the tedium of sitting on a bike trainer less boring

Any others?

Hellgate: London.

I played the fook out of this during the day and actually finished the game. It had it all- weapons upgrade, character progression, challenging but no impossible monsters, varied game play, online multiplayer, solo mode etc.

Apparently the latest incarnation is crap, but I feel like loading the old game and playing solo mode.

Werewolves of London on the Amstrad.

What a great game to play in the 80s before age restrictions on video games.

Wish it was remade.

i always thought it odd that the developers of the Getaway would go to such lengths to map out the whole of London, and then bolt it onto some really half-baked game mechanics. Plus the cutscenes are like something out of the worst level Danny Dyer gangster flick.

One of my favourite titles of all time. Fantastic soundtrack too by (Aussie) Austin Wintory.

Going back a little further...

London Blitz (Atari 2600)
London Adventure (ZX Spectrum)
The Great Fire of London (ZX Spectrum)
There's A Bomb Under Parliament (ZX Spectrum)

Werewolves of London was also released on the Spectrum and Commodore 64.

Dodgy Geezers (Spectrum, Electron etc) also featured a bunch of Cockney characters so was almost certainly set in or around London.

Also loosely related - Bug Byte's General Election (Spectrum), Mastertronic's The Election Game (C64) and Virgin's Election (Spectrum, C64).

Yeah it was rubbish in my opinion.

Never managed to get through more than about an hour of it. Whole thing just played really badly.

I didn't think the Getaway was that bad but then it was 20 years ago. Nostalgia's not what it used to be.

GRID Legends is 70% off at the moment on Steam, tempting.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 had a London level which I wasted a fair bit of time on.
