WC of WH Players: Group 20
Please vote for whichever player you like best, using the poll, which will be added shortly. They don't have to be the best at football, just your favourite, the player you have good memories of etc. The thread can also be a good place to discuss the players.
Looks like a close group
STEVE LOMAS
VLADIMIR COUFAL
BOBBY MOORE
IAN PEARCE

I like Shaggy, Vlad and was it Leeds at home when Pearce turned into Cafu and just rampaged up the wing all night?
But only one winner here isn't there? Arise Sir Robert.

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 20
Well Bobby Moore was before my time.........
My Dad went to three cup finals in the 60s and saw Moore lift a trophy on all three occasions.
Growing up Bobby was royalty in my family. If the Queen were coming round and Bobby was coming round later, Mum would save the best biscuits for Bobby (not that either ever came round as far as I can remember).
It always seems strange to me that he was never Sir Bobby, today players are given knighthoods for far less than he achieved.

All you lot who keep saying ‘I can’t vote for XXX cos I’m too young and never saw him play’ and who voted for Thomas Repka over Ken Brown can now stew.

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 20
Anyone else remember Pearce playing wing? He tore someone apart in one game (Leeds?) and we thought we had our centre half converted into a rampaging forward. Turned out to be a one off and ‘stick Pearce up front’ was one of the desperate cynical cries as we slid towards relegation.
Lomas was a good captain but I never found him inspiring as a player. Gave you 7/10 every single game never raising or dropping it and I guess everyone needs someone like that in the middle. He’d make a good foil for Rice right now. Great attitude.
Coufal has given me my two favourite moments of the Moyes era - at the end of Lyon and Frankfurt. He’s everything Thomas ****ing Repka wasn’t, just a shame we didn’t find him 5 years before.

If only for those sublimely timed tackles against Brazil in WC 70 which I was just old enough to watch.
Nobody else in this group comes close IMHO.

It was Leeds. 3-0 at UP and Pearcey was a revelation that night. Sadly, definitely not a striker, but ...Doc H Ball wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 9:22 am Anyone else remember Pearce playing wing? I loved Stevie Lomas - a bit of the Bondso tenacity and spirit in that man, but obviously, there can only one winner in this group, whether you watched him or not, and sadly I missed him by a couple of years. As you did too mate, methinks.

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 20
I was clearly referring to Lomas.
Edit: You are of course correct.
My vote therefore, reluctantly goes to Coufal..

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 20
i presume it's still fine to vote for players or have favourite players from before your time?
Bobby may have long retired before I was born, but I still know or have seen enough of him in order for me to revere him.
On a separate note, there was that really good doc on him from a few years back. BBC or C4 from memory?
And was there a dramatisation of his story, or am I imagining that?
On another separate note - shout-out for Steve Lomas, who I think was a massively underrated player. Apparentlty pretty dirty though - he took out one of my journo mates in a PR football match (ex pros vs journos). My colleague fouled him back and Lomas got the hump.

The four players tomorrow have the best part of 1,400 appearances for West Ham between them.
