I hadn't heard of this until your post and then low and behold saw one badged this way in the Manor House, Castle Coombe car park while dropping my son off to work on Friday.

The Chancellor has just announced that electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from road tax from April 2025.

Fantastic idea tbh, cuts on waste and manufacturer costs

Do them all the same then pay for the extras you want

Easier to buy second hand then add the features

Guy at work bought a Tesla model 3. It was 7k more than every other one he found but they had sold out..he asked why? Auto pilot feature .. they disabled it and sold it for 7k less to him

If he wants it back he can buy it again

Brilliant idea

No it doesn't. The features are already built into the car. You're just paying extra to unlock some software.

Well what a surprise!

Right up there with old "Buy a diesel car: Cheaper fuel and cleaner than petrol" routine.

But that's the point

So say from now on all mercs are built the same, just pick a colour and an engine

Then you can pay extra to have the slighter more powerful engine , or activate the heated seats.. much like you buy a trim level

Then when buy second hand the car is a blank canvas.. and you can pay for the added features instead of hunting for a car with them ..

Much like the Tesla I shared above. Guy got given 7k off his car price and if he wants it back he can pay 7k again

Certainly with Mercedes they operate a bit like that already. Certain options are activated for a fee rather than installed during the build. Things like dipping side mirrors when reverse is selected is one example. There is also a thriving market in activating all possible options by people who have a STAR (MB's detailed and expensive diagnostic and maintenance system).

it terms of waste it is, and it terms of finding the right second hand car for you knowing you could "add" the features to it rather than oh I found this one perfect price but doesnt have that one thing I need but no1 is selling one with that.. oh ill just contact honda and bobs your uncle it now has heated seats

You would think that ultimately it will increase.
If all cars are built and shipped in a "fully loaded" spec then surely that's what you will pay for. Then if you want to upgrade you'll be paying for something twice.

Economies of scale and every build being identicle. Must save them a **** load if they do it that way.

I'm going to look at a 2019 2.0d Jaguar XE tomorrow 🙈
