Indeed... with Jof it's not about sentiment but pure, raw talent

A few are still missing from this England ODI team. You'd expect Root to come back in at 3, Bairstow opening and Wood. I don't think Stokes will come back in...

As things stand we're probably looking at: Malan / Roy, Bairstow, Root, Brook, Buttler, Ali, Woakes, Curran, Wood / Toppers / Willey, Archer, Rashid.

Yes, maybe England could have got a few more runs, but they've played that situation perfectly and there isn't anyone that wouldn't take New Zealand being just under 300 runs behind with 3 wickets down, including Williamson back in the pavilion.

Highlights on the BT Sport website, you have to be a subscriber though, they are notoriously tight.

Caught a bit this morning, some very good bowling from Jimmy and Robinson. And a day 1 declaration? This really is a new era for Test cricket.

Agreed, and it's brilliant. Perversely though if this because the new norm in Test cricket it will likely sound the death knell for 5 day games - the 5th day simply won't be needed any more. It's fairly rare a test match goes to the last day in any case, let alone the way England go about things.

Root is really struggling under this new England approach. Probably the only player to go backwards under Stokes/Baz.

Not sure about that, Pete (especially with UK weather!).

Ironically he always scored at a good lick before as he was always so busy with 1s and 2s. He probably needs to just go back to being him - not like he would block the rate much at all

Will definitely be a hell of a test but shouldn't define the success or otherwise of this new approach IMO. India will do what they always do if they even sniff a competition these days and create unfit pitches.

For me, there should be a neutral panel of groundstaff that prepare pitches as fair as they can all over the world. Local weather, overhead conditions etc. should be sufficient to offer variety.
