Seven years? Checks birth certificate. Nope.

I think I'll max out on Premium Bonds and spend the rest on a few cases of Chateau Mouton Rothschild '76

Gentlemen, thank you. Not meaning to sound patronising. People disagreeing, arguing, crossing a line, apologising should be the norm but it is increasingly rare so thanks, from an old softie.

Now, follow the money...Who is getting rich on the back of all this? Who is posting record profits? Who is making political gains? Join the dots and we may have a smoking gun but I'm not smart enough to do it.

Slightly off topic but kind of relevant too I guess -

I watched Ed Stafford's ' 60 Days On The Estates ' last night whereby Stafford performs a social experiment by going to live on the Northumberland Park Estate near to Tottenham's new £1bn stadium .
We see Ed meet up with various locals - some are naturally suspicious , some welcome him into their homes - he meets up with Gang Members , Church Leaders , Single Mums struggling with up to 6 children , Drug Addicts trying to cope with mental illness etc , he helps out at Food Banks , brings along some chicken for a lovely single Mum trying her best to get out of a one bedroom flat reeking of damp and mould .
For a person like myself who has never known true poverty it really did bring it home to me - how can one of the richest countries in the World allow this to happen to its citizens ?

I don't think there's anything at all wrong with Capitalism , it's got to be better than lugging around 3 pigs to pay for a cow -

It's the way Governments choose to spend their money that's the problem - the way our Governments de-industrialised and sold off our manufacturing of this once great country of ours , that's the problem .

Anyway , that's talk for another day .

....but one that's been rescued and resuscitated by socialism three times since 2008, and has catastrophic failure written into its code as a feature not a bug.

Capitalism's okay for organising the distribution of cornflakes, but it's no basis for organising a whole society. Especially not the Quasimodo-capitalism version we've allowed to take route in this country, trashing the place to enrich a handful of already very rich people is no basis for running a whole society.

We had a decent setup from 1945 to the late 70's, with quantum jumps in life chances, health, prosperity and security for all, but otherwise it's been grim failure. Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Bolivia, Australia and New Zealand all run a superior version of Capitalism than us, and their citizens flourish and outscore us on anything worth measuring because of it.

Been more of a gap between haves and have not since I was young in the 80s.

Things like ULEZ (different thread I know) just compound the injustice. That single mum might only be able to afford an old banger to give kids a day away from awfulness of home.

I'm definitely not a socialist but want a fairer society.

I dont have the answers how

What we need is a system based on the best of capitalism combined with the best of socialism.
I realise the two might be somewhat at odds though...

Capitalism: How can I spend you money on me?

Socialism: How can I spend your money on people who vote for me?

I'd guess the bank bailout, COVID money and the energy payouts.

Not sure they were socialism really were they?

It can be done mate, as JP posted other countries have a different approach to capitalism that seems to more evenly share the wealth. The bottom line though is that they're still capitalist systems, systems that are funding socialist policies.........

The Tories turned temporarily Socialist whilst simultaneously showing the worst side of capitalism during the Covid pandemic -

On the one hand giving away us plebs ' free money ' whilst giving their friends [ and scammers ] even more ' free ' money .

How's Lady/Baroness Mone getting on with the clearing of her name - is she back at the House Of Lords yet ?
