not sure mate if you've ever read the Dune books.

imvho, and I'm not a big sci fi fan, and had iirc never read a sci fi book until then, it is an incredible bit of literature.

the follow ups sometimes seem like just that. follow ups. but the way he makes Dune and Arakis the places they are, well, it really caught my attention.

in fact his son and a co writer wrote some others which I think hold up really well. they explain a lot of the back stories of the planet systems and the guilds and the navigators.

very well worth a read if you have the time and you haven't already.

I would definitely recommend the first one if nothing else.

My missus went to a concert in LA last night so I went with her. Went to the cinema next door & the choice was Fast Furious 10, Guardians of the Galaxy or Little Mermaid (on several screens).

None of those interested me.

Tucked away at the bottom was The Machine, a film about some college bloke getting drunk in Russia. So I picked that.

It was 2 hours long. Should have been about 45 minutes.

Saw Fast X, not for me to much over the top. Tonight I saw SISU. One man against the Nazis trying to get home with his gold. Plenty of violence and suspended belief, but good fun.

on tap for next year apparently....

Gladiator 2 (or whatever they're going to call it...)

can it live up to the billing ?

they've certainly chucked some stars into it.

Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi reprise their roles
Pedro Pascal
Denzel Washington
Paul Mescal (no clue for me no idea WHO he is)

going back though there were some unbelievable stars in the original........

Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi

necessary ? or not..?

The first Gladiator film grossed a whopping total of $503 million USD at the international box office, exactly quintupling its budget of $103 million USD.

If it had exactly quintupled its budget of $103million USD, it would have grossed a whopping total of $515 million USD at the international box office.

Lies, or just bad maths?

bad math and/or it sounds much better to say "exactly quintuple" than almost or exactly 4.whatever number it is...

I didn't bother to work out to the nth degree whether it was correct or not, it looked close enough to me...

Decent enough actor but not box office enough to carry a movie of that stature. Assume he'll be the lead actor, because he'll be fairly cheap, and can easily be blamed if it doesn't make big money. I'd guess he's got the physical chops to play Maximus, he played Gaelic football to a high level, but I'm not sure he's got enough charisma.

Was talking to a mate about this one , he was a big Gladiator fan back in the day .

The only thing I've ever seen Paul Mescal in was ' Normal People ' [ BBC ] - bit of an epic story which bored me sh*tless after 2 episodes ., he seemed dull as ditchwater in that but he could have been acting .

Indiana Jones.

I am a huge Indy fan and had a blast!

Saw so much bad stuff written about it was pretty worried going in, but needn't have been. Myself and the kids loved it.

Sure it will never beat the original bur way ahead of number four for me. Had car chases, giant bugs, Nazis, felt like a proper Indy film despite his age.

Yeah it got a bit daft towards the end but don't they all.

For me it's 1,3,2,5.....................................................................................................................................................4.

Family trip to the cinema last night for Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny and we all thought it was a hoot.
Conscious of its mixed reviews I was fearful of another Kingdom of The Crystal Skull abomination. What we got was an old fashioned romp with nods to its heritage and although far from perfect, was a fitting finale for Harrison Ford.
Some of the CGI was a bit clumsy, especially during the opening scene on the train but it was everything you could want and decent support from Mads Mickelson in the evil Nazi role demanded by the franchise, along with the ever dependable Toby Jones. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is an eye catching sidekick and there are sime surprises along the way with the cast.
If you're a fan of the other films in the series, it's well worth a trip to the flicks. £25 for 2 adults and a student at the local flea pit far more palpable than £54 at the Odeon in town.

FWIW, my order of preference is 1, 3, 5, 2 and 4 a long way back.

I found the first 25 minutes and the de-ageing CGI just really weird. The rest of the film was really boring, but hey, if you’ve always been a fan of Indy you probably would’ve enjoyed it.

Franchises should sometimes be allowed to die or, rebooted like Bond. When you try and cling onto the past and rely on pure nostalgia the result is a mess of a film.
