Excruciating. It's no wonder punk happened, is it.

Yup, 77 was a horror movie.
Highlight for me of the four was Cashflow, Mine All Mine. One of my all time fav tunes.
Choon.

Re: The Top of the Pops Thread
Seem to recall '77 as being a lame year too, what with 'Telephone Man' and 'Calling Occupants'. 'Heroes' was that year though wasn't it? And it's now 'cool' to like 'I Feel Love'.
Punk had already happened, but I wasn't listening to it.

I'm getting a 'Disco Sucks' vibe here...
Not much bar The Pistols before '77, was there V? In terms of what most would recognise punk as, ie a predominantly UK movement, not necessarily including pioneers like The NY Dolls/Ramones etc.vietnammer wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 11:23 amPunk had already happened, but I wasn't listening to it.

Re: The Top of the Pops Thread
Thankfully Bon Scott and co. were in place to save us all (as, in fairness, was Plastic Bertrand earlier in the show):

I thought Bronski Beat's live version of Smalltown Boy was going to blow everything else out of the water, but then Plastic Bertrand turned up.

Re: The Top of the Pops Thread
Absolute bumper week.
AC/DC
The video of Kylies Put Yourself In My Place.
Jimmy Nail with what appeared to be Acl Rose on backing vocals
Sheryl Crow
Plastic (well the baguette sisters stole the show)
The Smurf’s
Lindisfarne
And David bleedin Soul
84 stank the place out though

I can't find a YouTube clip, but Boney M tonight, Ma Baker from 1977; the male 'singer' (I think he was a dancer who mimed), some of his moves were amazing, almost proto-robotics. Watch it on iPlayer.

Re: The Top of the Pops Thread
When was it on last night? I tuned in at 7pm as per and there was some sort of jazz recital happening. Haven't seen it for a few weeks tbh. Have they changed the time for it? I got bored watching the jazz and stuck the new Evil Dead film on instead which, in fairness, did resemble some of those seventies episodes of TotP.

^ It's been on after the Proms for the last few weeks, and presumably will be for the next month or so. They have binned off the 90s episodes and are mainly 80s and late 70s, at least for the time being.

Thank God for that. Were some absolute stinkers from that decade in recent weeks.

Re: The Top of the Pops Thread
You're kidding?
I'm a bit too young to have liked punk when it happened (Johnny Rotten scared the hell out of me as an 8 year old), but that 1976 episode was a perfect example of why punk was needed. I've never heard Cliff Richard sing falsetto before, but I sincerely hope I never do again.

I'd have been 12 but the Bee Gees, Manfred Mann, Elton John & Kiki Dee were the only songs I knew.
Don't even remember the dance group, who must have had a short reign between Pans People and Legs & co

Re: The Top of the Pops Thread
Yeah fair enough, went downhill fast after Manfred Mann & BeeGees. That cliff “falsetto” was excruciating and it didn’t really recover from there.southbrishammer wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 12:28 am You're kidding?

Re: The Top of the Pops Thread
A fair amount of pish so far today. Can 89 save things? Hasn't started brilliantly, if I'm honest...
