Timeline of New Music Genres

Post by Shabu »

Does anyone know if there's a timeline of New Music Genres or, if not, can we build one?

Not sure how far it would go back but from what I know it's....

(& I am just guessing) Can you please add any dates or other types of music....

Classical 1600?
Doo wop
Blues
Jazz
Rock n Roll
Funk
Rap
Jazz funk
House
Taylor Swift
Grime

What am I missing?

You can use Wikipedia as your starting point to build a genre timeline list/table. The classical scene is basically done for you. As usual, a lot of this is open to interpretation. Here's a jazz family tree as an example,

Ska - Bluebeat, Rocksteady, Reggae, Dancehall ….
Disco - Funk, Soul, R n B ….

I’d suggest that it is nigh on impossible to get a timeline for it all, let alone a family tree.

80s indie was anything not on a major label - just looking back at some of the 'indie' album charts published in Melody Maker and the NME, they included e.g. Nina Simone, Erasure, The Swans, Danielle Dax, Nuclear Assault, Yazoo, Hawkwind, Eartha Kitt, Conflict etc etc

I recall Erasure regularly being top of the indie single and album charts and thinking "WTF"?

Well, them and The Fall.

It’s strange how many different genres and artists you get into in a relatively short period in your formative years.

Was never into pop, rave or proper heavy metal but from the age of 11 - 19 had spells where I had a lot of CDs from these genres:

New Jack Swing - Bobby Brown, Color Me Badd etc
Hard rock - GnR, Aerosmith, Metallica, Def Leppard etc
Rap - Snoop, Dre, Warren G, Biggie, 2Pac, Big Pun

Stayed a fan of rap and hard rock from 19 - 35 and then woke up with greying hair and for 10 years since have listened almost exclusively to Phil Collins.

And yes, I know Pinky on here absolutely hates him!

Monkeys: Ten Summoners' Tales is a favourite of mine. Sting got looads better after he left The Police.

Anyway, without going into detail, living in China '99-'01 it was clear that they were opening up to 'western' music but had little idea of the progression of rock'n'roll/pop from the 50's onwards. They were getting the whole lot all at once.

You thought ‘WTF’ about The Fall??? 😉

KH’s previous post about the bands in the Indie charts back in the day, does show the difficulty of Shab’s request in his original post.

I found early on in my musical awareness that getting too hooked on genres was futile … 2Tone was the first genre that I really got into and had I limited my listening to that, then I wouldn’t have listened to much music whatsoever. I think one visit to a record shop saw me leave with 2 albums - one by The Cramps and the other by Level 42!!
