Re: What did you watch last night?
Daliland: Ben Kingsley as Salvador Dali, as he refers to himself in the 3rd person throughout. No idea how accurate, but get the impression that there's no accuracy to be aimed for cos he was so, well, surreal. Was a blast recognising Alice Cooper (in impersionation) just cos I'd seen photos on FB of them hanging out, which it seems they did. Set in his later life and gives the idea that he was being used and abused (for money) by his wife Gala. For me, gets the message across of someone who stood outside of life and saw it in his own, bizarre terms.

Re: What did you watch last night?
There weren't that many 'classic's though were they? Even in the 80's, most of them were garbage. There were a handful at most of what you could call classics. Bay of Blood, Black Christmas, Halloween 1 and 2, Friday the 13th (which has aged worse than Halloween). Not many more than that really. They started to get better when they started to poke a bit more fun at it. Scream was better than most of the stuff that inspired it. I loved Terrifier 2. Horrific gore, a top notch villain that can't die, some sick and twisted humour, and a story that makes no sense. What more can you ask for? I think Art the Clown has the potential to be one of the all time great horror villains.SirStoneyOfBow wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2024 2:51 pm The sequel is a better film but still lacks the charm or charisma of the classic 80's slashers it desperately tries to emulate.

Halloween is still very much a movie that eclipses them all, in my eyes.
Art the Clown has his moments, and leaving a lasting mark is clearly what Damien Leone has intended for him.
He’s certainly memorable and that’s definitely something in the positive column.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is definitely one that hit every facet and the first four Friday the 13th films are still real good value.Colne Dynamo wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2024 7:04 pm There weren't that many 'classic's though were they? Robocop (2010) - Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keyton - A remake of the original film. I liked it. Decent storyline, the three actors mentioned put in a great performance and top CGI.
Bonus - a lot less "Dakka dakka dakka" than the original!

Signora Volpe S02 E2
bit like the McDonald & Dodds final episode, I guessed the plot at least halfway through. not praising myself much at all, it was so fairly obvious.
however, still a very good cast, an overlying second plot, so to speak, and of course the stunning scenery.
think these series MUST come up with much more complex story lines without overdoing it of course, but it's still very watchable t.v.
as mentioned before, am looking forward to the new The Chelsea Detective series, hoping it's soon...might have to wait now until early 2025 as we're in August already (obviously)....

Catching up back from hols.
Last 2 eps of McDonald and Dodds. Love it, the relationship between the two main characters cracks me up.
Casualty 2eps. Saddest scenes ever when Dylan had to have his dog put down at the vets "you've been my best ever friend"
The Turkish Detective, tried again...nope, even Her OFTness who had been keener than I before the hols gave it up.
The Jetty. 2 eps , decent enough hoping to finish it tonight.

Me too. I do like a 'police procedural' but I've given this a couple of goes and it just ain't arresting me somehow.

The Mallorca Files
finishing up S 01 and what's not to like. good cast. decent stories and fabulous scenery. which as you all know is my caveat for pretty much investing in a series. anything over and above that is a major plus.
incidentally S 03 is "available" from the usual sources...
cheers again M-H

Wild Wild Space - Sky Docs
I am a space nut, grew up in the 60's, wrote a play about Apollo 8 while in junior school, so this film is pretty much made for me.
Ross Kauffman has done a first rate job of setting up the players and then subtly laying out the intense competition that now exists to be the Ryan Air/Easy Jet of low earth orbit satellite launch companies.
Musk is way ahead of pack in the higher end launch vehicle market, but his rockets cost $68m a pop to send up so a group of nerds in the US and a complete wack job farm boy in New Zealand saw a gap in the market for low cost launchers, they meet a guy who mentors them, he's head of the US military space programme and the ex head of Reagans star wars scheme, his name is Brigadier General Peter Worden and takes over a NASA dept he hires them all and sets them free to do what they want which is to make satellites at a tiny fraction fo the cost that NASA do, which brings Waldron into a conversation with Pres Obama who asks how cheap, Wardon says" our last two satellites cost us $4k and $10k each"
What Kauffmans film does so well is draw you in to the competitive needle that exists between the three main players. One is a flash kid that is coming at it from a completely capitalist point of view, he is tailgating his genius ubber nerd Uni pals who are into revolutionising space and using it on the whole for the benefit of mankind, the NZ farm boy is wonderfully wakko, he's bright, driven and totally committed to being a space guy, but has no formal engineering training or in fact any training of any kind, he just really really wants to be a space guy.
The film establishes the characters and then lines you up to watch the dawn of a new age in space industry, as witnessed by stock exchange listings for all three firms, make the nerds billions in the doing.
I loved it, the New Zealand guy is everything you'd imagine of a farm boy from the remote southern part of that country, he isn't a man in a shed, he doesn't even have one of those, his space programme starts from a container in his sheep field.

Re: What did you watch last night?
Abigail
A pretty entertaining horror comedy where a group of criminals ambitiously execute a plan to kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of an anonymous billionaire for a ransom of $50m.
As they hunker down for 24 hours in a seemingly secluded mansion and await payment, they realize all not is quite right with this mansion or the girl herself...
A very good cast (the actress playing Abigail herself is outstanding), some funny dialogue and a plethora of blood and gore. I very much enjoyed this one.

I'm gonna give "late night with the devil" a go this evening. I like the premise, and the trailer has sold it enough for me to want to watch it .

Re: What did you watch last night?
Godzilla x Kong
Between this and Abigail, How’d I unwittingly manage a Dan Stevens (yes Matthew Crawley) double bill this weekend?
In any case, this is a ridiculous popcorn flick worth a watch especially if you enjoyed Godzilla v Kong from a few years prior.
I’m a big fan of Godzilla Minus One but these recent Hollywood productions have their fair share of enjoyment.
More action, more monsters, and a whole lot more fun.
Stick your brain in a box for 2 hours and have a blast.

Re: What did you watch last night?
Itvx Totally Completely Fine. 4 eps in to this typically quirky darkly comical Australian drama about three dysfunctional siblings and their seemingly very unfair splitting of inheritance from their grandfather.
Took a while to get the characters but we love it.
In other news, for those of us who like this type of stuff, BBC have confirmed that series 3 of BEYOND PARADISE is currently being filmed

Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV
A five-part documentary series that focuses on the toxic workplace that was Nickledeon back in the 90's and 2000's when those pretty dreadful but highly popular teen sitcoms were all the rage thanks due to one man - Dan Schneider.
Well, it turns out Schnieder's ego and self-importance made him believe he could turn the misogyny dial up to 11, treating female staff like **** and perving over the stars he made household names (the likes of Ariande Grande, Amanda Bynes, Jamie Lynn Spears etc).
What was made worse was the number of paedophiles working there using the studios as an opportunist way to prey on unsuspecting victims. While their repulsive actions are not directly linked in any way to Schneider, it just adds to the drama and the poisonous environment.
A fascinating yet damning few hours.

The Walking Dead - Daryl Dixon [ Sky ]
Somehow , Daryl ends up in France tied to an upside down dinghy -
I mean , it's OK - bit like how the Rick/Michonne spin-off was ok but it's not Series One of The Walking Dead .
