Physical Media D̶i̶n̶o̶s̶a̶u̶r̶s̶ Collectors 🦕 💿
We've got a Digital Media Collectors thread, thought I'd fly the flag for the auld buggers among us who refuse to exclusively stream or save everything on a big HDD. Convenience and portability be damned! Who's still buying CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K UHD Blu-rays? Who's repurchasing all their vinyl LPs they threw away a quarter of a century ago?
I still collect movies and TV shows the old fashioned way. I have somewhere in the region of 2600 films or shows on DVD, Blu or 4K. I've still got a few CDs but I never play those (I use the free versions of either Spotify or YouTube for my aural fixes).
http://www.invelos.com/DVDCollection.aspx/last.caress
I want to get back into vinyl but I'm somewhat alarmed by the shocking prices of new albums these days. I'm thinking if getting a modest turntable and then buying maybe two, three dozen of my very favourite albums and then leaving it there.
Anyone else still hoarding physical Media? With the current boom in vinyl, it can't just be me, surely? I know Bubbles1966 is still rockin' around the clock to his beautifully kept 33s (and as a lover of old Rock 'n' Roll myself I bet that's a collection to die for, right there). So that's two of us. I've got to imagine Bunk, Proph, Korea and my lovely Cockneyboy have all got some well-filed crates through which to dig. So that's half a dozen of us. Anyone else? Show us your collections!

Vinyl's where I've gone after digital travails. Rebuilding that collection slowly but surely. Still have all of my cd's too but haven't bought one since the early noughties.

I have a huge collection of CDs (around 4000 at a guess) , DVDs & Blurays (no idea as to how many) as well as about 400 vinyl albums.
I gave up buying vinyl when it tailed off in popularity. I used to love the sleeve artwork and stuff but I've never been tempted to go back to it since it''s resurgence. It's far too expensive for a start and you are limited to playing it at home. I listen to a lot of music in the car and CDs suit me much better for their flexibility. I also believe they sound better. I 've never done streaming as I like to own physical copies and also like to think I am giving money back to the artist especially as I listen to a lot of 'off the beaten track' independent bands and musicians.
I don't find I buy many films and TV shows lately though other than rare stuff that would be difficult to see elsewhere.
My wife hates the whole idea of it all as I ran out of storage space years ago and now have piles of stuff everywhere.
If I popped my clogs tomorrow she's probably chuck the whole lot in a skip.

I don't buy half as many CD's/records (I hate the term vinyl) as I used to. But since the early 90's I still never walk past a record shop, whether it be- Our Price, Virgin Megastore, HMV or an independent without walking in and buying something. It's an addiction I just can't shake.
There's a great charity shop in Frinton called St Helena Music & Collectibles that just sells physical media of all descriptions.
And I love it.

I try to limit my collection to those films I think I'll re-watch time and again but sometimes I'll buy a film I didn't get round to watching in the cinema -

I sold all my vinyl last year to a mate (http://www.pulserecords.co.uk/ if anyone's thinkng of doing the same).
He gave me what I thought was a very generous amount, but then I saw how much some of it was selling for. Still, it was just sitting around gathering dust, so win-win I guess.

I can't remember the last time I bought a CD, or even put one of my large collection in a player (I used to work at HMV Head Office in the days before streaming so used to buy loads of CDs and DVDs at a generous discount) - a shame but streaming is so much more convenient and in truth I rarely have time to just sit down and listen to music now.
I still buy quite a few films though on 4K Blu-ray - streaming is fine but the higher bit rates certainly make a difference in picture and especially sound if you have a decent set-up. I do generally limit it to films that benefit from this though, although I have stopped myself from buying the Star Wars saga yet again (first VHS then DVD then Blu-ray)

Sold all my vinyl in the early 1990's I had a big collection having run a record shop in the 1970's. My family bought me a record player a few years back so I am now buying all the same records all over again....!!!

I had a disgustingly large VHS collection. Must have been 2000 of them at least. Stacked up floor to ceiling across a whole wall in my garage.
Never watched any of them after about 2006. Took the whole lot to the dump about 2014.
I have a pretty good collection of games still, proudly presented in my front room. All my old Sega, N64, PS1, PS2, PC and Wii games. They actually seem to have some value.

I bought my first LP in 1969 (Goodbye Cream). Considering that I really don't have the size of collection I probably should. many hundreds of albums rather than thousands. I haven't bought any V LPs for a while.
I was late to CD's, can't remember how long ago now but a long while even after people I know were on the 2nd or 3rd player. I now have many hundreds of CD's and still buy them from time to time with albums I wanted but couldn't afford for years as a youth, then family man etc. with a CD Box set my favourite thing. Consequently, I don't listen to much 'new' music either
There's some singles somewhere and a few cassettes.a few DVD's and that's it.
I've no interest in Streaming at all, even to the point where it turns out the small one box player we have in one room has such a feature but its only used for CD's

Yes LC!
My kind of nerdy thread
Hundreds' of CD's gathering dust and spiderwebs down the shed and a large selection of vinyl indoors. A lot of it is in the loft due to spacing issues which isn't ideal but when it's super hot i drag it down until the temperature cools a bit (my Wife loves that) I can see it's going to be super hot this Sunday Monday actually so I'll be up there bringing it all down for a few days.
There is a temptation to sell some of it, but hopefully the child will be moved out in a few years and I can get a music room. It's all I want. A place to play my records, have a mix if i want (only room to set up one deck in the house currently) with maybe a little fridge with a few cans in it. Heaven.

I have a decent amount of Blu Ray dvd's but I don't use them because I the sound tracking does not match up to the visual tracking, and I can't figure out how to fix that.

I'm putting together a basic DJ set up for home us. I'ge got a mixer, speakers on the way, now working on amp and dual turntables.
That said, not having decks didn't stop me buying the first 5 Bryan ferry Albums plus 1 roxy album on vinyl for just over £30 today.

I have a small pile of vinyl from the 80s which I have kept for posterity but rarely play because I find Spotify more convenient and never bought into the 'romance' of vinyl. I quite enjoy a browse in a proper second hand record shop but rarely buy anything for the same reason.
However I recently went into Rough Trade Records and found it a very strange experience. They charge around £40 for a vinyl copy of the most recent remaster of albums I bought back in the day for a tenner. So they take the pops and crackles out with the remaster then let them back in again by putting it on vinyl. It's like a weird facsimile of the past, the new Old.
I won't be going there again.

I love playing my LP's. I will admit, however, that flipping the album over is a low grade pain the rump. I guess I listen differently than I used to. Back in the day I'd sit and listen from start to finish. These days I do other things while I listen, for the most part.

I can't really listen to singles any more because it's a bit of a faff turning them over/off after a minute and a half (how long a lot of 50s singles last).
I've still got a few hundred mind, including EPs.
I listen to vinyl LPs at home - probably have about 500-600 at home that are mine, most of the others are just passing through with one or two listens (buy/sell).
Probably about 100-200 CDs left - sold many, but some are things I collected between 1995-2015 and there are no alternative formats - I still enjoy a CD in the car, and have don't like self edited playlists etc anymore.
DVDs - 500/600 now. Part of my move to unsubscribing/defunding various media groups.
A lot of these things are so ridiculously cheap if bought in bundles - use them and sell them on once you're finished with them.
CDs and DVDs all in slipcovers - saves about 75% on storage space.

Still have all my vinyl from the DJing days. About 3k singles and albums, altogether. Mostly worth pennies, but the dance (house, hardcore & jungle) stuff is worth a bit more due to rarity.
I have more video games, though. Another matter altogether, but a lot of those are disappearing unlike music.

Still have all my old vinyl, don't think I'll ever sell any of those again. I did have a spell on the dole back in the early 90's whereby I did sell about 4 albums to get some beer money. But i didn't get as much as I wanted so knocked that on the head straight away. Plus I want to keep them for nostalgic reasons.
Last vinyl I bought would have been Iron Maiden's 'Brave New World' on double picture disc. Refuse to buy vinyl since it made a comeback due to the price.
Which is the main reason why my CD collection now is way larger in quantity. I'm not one for new music unless it's a new release from a select few of my favourite bands. The last few years I've gotten into older bands and then gone out and bought the majority of their back catalogue. Which is why a trip to HMV or a visit online to Amazon/Music Magpie/Discogs sees me spending a ridiculous amount of money and coming away with 10 or 15 CDs at a time.
XTC, Carter USM/Jim Bob, Big Country, Arctic Monkeys to name a few examples.
Also there's been other bands where I've followed them early in their career but stopped buying their CD's for no reason at some point. Again it's a case of rediscovering them and going out and buying the back catalogue of the ones I missed out on. Weezer and Foo Fighters being classic examples.
Also I still have all my old VHS music collection, and quite a bit on DVD as well. Think I'm bit of a hoarder!
