Old Skool Doom

Post by dasnutnock3 »

Out now on Gamepass, and very nice it is too. Doom + Doom 2 plus hundreds of other levels and game packs. Graphics updated to modern frame rates, new enemies & weapons, optional (much better) mixed audio, mods, 16 player online multiplayer. Come on then, get them shotguns lit up...

That had somehow slipped me by, I had Doom on the SNES first and later a PC copy that I played quite a bit.

Have you played the recent reboots? I quite like them especially the sound tracks Mick Gordon knows what he’s doing!

I've played just about every iteration of Doom I've been able to get my hands on. It's probably my favourite game franchise, certainly of the 32-bit era and beyond. The yardstick by which all other FPS games are measured (IMO).

I had a go on the original Doom a couple of months ago, streamed free as part of the Playstation Plus subscription.

It was the first FPS I played that I can remember back in the day, certainly the first LAN game, and the floppy disc I had got from HMV we installed on work PCs and used to play 4 player deathmatch at lunchtime in the office. Happy days

Playing it again I did find the fact that you could only look horizontally and not vertically a bit odd to get used to, and shooting bad guys on high platforms was possible by shooting under them as you couldn't shoot up. Things have moved on quite a bit its fair to say. However for an hour or so of nostalgia it was nice to play again

The new Doom is a remake done right, all the things that made the old game so great with some really good modern additions. Also helps that the harpoon on the double barrel shotgun is one of the most fun weapons in all of gaming
