Tried FF15.
Seemed abysmal. Started very flat and boring. Combat rubbish, characters annoying and vague, general quests seemed tedious.
Long way from the legendary PS1 days.
I genuinely might be done with triple A games.

Interesting you should say that as I found the writing for the latest expansion of FF14 a lot lower standard than previous expansions.

Kvark. An unexpectedly enjoyable homage to Half-Life with some excellent soviet-era details.

I think it's JRPG's in general.Metal Hammer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 12:24 pm Interesting you should say that as I found the writing for the latest expansion of FF14 a lot lower standard than previous expansions.
They seem ridiculous. The standard tropes they use are off putting and I think they have been very lazily written in those I have played.

Yes I agree although the villain in the Shadowbringers expansion was excellently written. Compare him to the pathetic main character in Dawntrail who I just wanted to side against as she was so bloody annoying!

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
I think the writing quality perception between Shadowbringers/Endwalker vs Dawntrail is also the fact that the former two were the climax of a story that had building up over a long period of time whereas Dawntrail is trying to start again with new lore and world building. So it's almost like A Realm Reborn again...again...
If you are looking for a top tier JRPG at the moment, if you excuse the silly name Metaphor ReFantazio is an absolute gem so far. It's made by the people who made Persona and is very similar in the look & gameplay, but is less of a high school drama and more of a political fantasy story. Could be my GOTY

It is very good title from a company who have an excellent record with these kind of games, rich narrative allows a plethora of ways to advance the story.
You can get very attached to your characters and some of the potential endings are BLEAK.

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
I picked up the PC version a few years back and I've played through it a few times with different styles (veritable angel, to complete ****hole) to see what difference it made. I remember it being a bit steered at times but definitely worth a playing through whatever your preference, although it seemed to lean more towards good choices. I paid more than £12.50 for it but don't regret whatever I did pay for it.
In fact I might dig it out and give it another go!

Hopping between a few things between my Xbox and steam deck
Xbox I’ve been doing my best to ‘speed run’ resident evil 2 remake and finally unlocked the unlimited ammo rocket launcher which funny enough makes things rather a lot simpler
Steam deck I’m doing a new game + on the Witcher 3 and casually playing Dave the diver really nice ‘cozy game’ that I’d picked up cheap in the last steam sale.

I enjoyed the Witcher 3 but I'm not sure I could be bothered to do a 2nd playthrough!Brickworks Iron wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 9:58 pm Hopping between a few things between my Xbox and steam deck

I've finished Age of Empires Definitive Edition and moved on to Age of Empires II

2,500 hours into DayZ .
Still a noob.
Playing the Namalsk map atm, cold, frozen food, no loot, minimal bullets, loads of zombies, EVR storms, other players as desperate to survive as I am & at any moment I could lose everything I've worked so hard to collect.
It's masochism in gaming form & I love it.

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
The last epoch - level 85 - it's a grind but my home brew is doing well. I've killed all the bosses i needed to kill and am now on level 90 Monoliths and I'm pissing it. The lack of better equipment is a bit of a pain, but I've got some idea and I might be able to upgrade some stuff I've got.
A nice little feature is The Nemesis. You meet these randomly and very occasionnally they give you a chance to upgrade items to legendary status. You have to store them with your nemesis, fight them and if you win the item gets upgraded. If you lose it is locked with your nemesis until you next meet him!

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
While having a tidy up on my PS5 I realized I hadn’t finished the last two missions on Hitman III.
Always a good time trying to figure your way to success with these games, and always be ready to save frequently.
Mission replays are always a giggle as you open new areas to start allowing you fast track your way to certain types of eliminations.
All three titles are excellent, and a proper counter to the usual guff out there.

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
I downloaded the latest Call of Duty off gamepass, the first time I've ever 'owned' one of these games.
Gave the campaign a go. Lasted about 45 minutes during which there seemed to be more cut scenes than action.
A dreadful experience.

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
Such a poor investment into their campaign modes these days, as they make their money from the online gameplay, which is ultimately what the user wants, but the campaign modes have fallen off of a cliff in their recent releases.
GTA have always done it pretty well, where they stagger the release of online, forcing people to play through the campaign before people flock online.

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
Having never owned a Sega Saturn and somewhat regretting it 30 years on, I never got to play one it’s elite exclusives - Panzer Dragoon.
A 90% saving ($24.99 to $2.49) on the PlayStation Store was too good to pass up the remake that was released a few years back.
I managed a few levels this evening and the game was a lot of fun.
Even with the homing laser and a massive f*** off dragon I still got my arse kicked.
Great stuff.

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
Picked up Skyrim SE for about £6.
I had it on release back in my uni days, but although I hold a lot of nostalgia for it, I barely remember much of it.
That's all good though, because it's been a joy playing an RPG that isn't as complicated as a lot of today's offerings, and once I've done the vanilla version I'll have a go with some mods.
Playing via GeForce Now, with an RTX4080, means I can max the graphics settings and still get high FPS.
I've gone for a standard sword and shield build, but will delve into magic later in the game.

Re: 🕹️ What are you playing right now?
yep agree its terrible, im a couple of hours in but got so bored.
Multi player is odd as well as there is no real bonus for headshots as Activision have tried to even out the TTK.
Not a good game at all.
