The director has another film, on the Channel 4 player actually, called Enys Men, which, depending on how far out you're prepared to go, might be worth a look. It's obviously by the same person - Cornwall, the sea, boats, smashing glass, long scenes in which little happens - but it's even more glacial and the plot such as there is one is very well hidden. I found it quite hypnotic though, and in the last quarter of the film things speed up like a tape unspooling and you suddenly have at least lots of questions, if not necessarily the answers. It's being labelled folk horror because that genre is having a moment, but there's nothing horrific about it. Unsettling, definitely.Monkeybubbles wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 1:17 pm We watched it on your recommendation, Korea.
It's very good.

Memoria - 2 hours of Tilda Swinton wandering about enigmatically in Colombia. What, if anything, is happening is anybody's guess, and it's incredibly slow (at one point, I was watching intently for a good 20 seconds before I realised it was on pause), but I loved it. And the ending will surprise you. Like Enys Men, another film that shuns the normal 3-act film narrative and gives you a different visual texture.

Yes, very enjoyable and a real 80s nostalgia-fest, right from the opening sequence on Concorde. Some good performances in it too - thought Danny Dyer was excellent.

Day of the Jackal
Ridiculous casting and very far fetched but it is compulsive viewing
Watched the first 5 episodes and now cannot wait for episode 6

The Whale
A somber watch this, but made particularly riveting by the performances of Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink and Hong Chau.
Based on a play, it’s set entirely in the home of a man who after losing his lover gains 600lbs in a binge eating extravaganza. Nearing the end, he attempts to reconnect with his delinquent daughter he abandoned 8 years prior.
The twist ending sadly was not that Fraser’s character turns out to be the gluttony victim in Se7en.

House of 1000 Corpses
Very meh. No mystery, no tension, irritating villains.
Rob Zombie is actually a decent director imo, however he's let down by his writing.

Watched the first 5 episodes but didn't give them my full concentration - so last night I began re-watching them and found the series to be very well made and entertaining - Eddie Redmayne is good , very good though I'm not sure he's suited to a villa outside Cadiz .
Keep to the shade , Ed .

Yeah, I like Zombie and his movies for the most part, but I never warmed to House of 1000 Corpses either, for the same reasons you outlined there. 31 was poor too, I thought.Colne Dynamo wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2024 8:52 am House of 1000 Corpses... Very meh. No mystery, no tension, irritating villains.
Somewhat intrigued by this even though it's not my usual thing, although I was slightly put off when I realised it was a show rather than a movie. Still, it's prompted me to purchase the 1973 film, which I also haven't seen. Maybe if I like that I'll give the show a go.westham, eggyandchips wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2024 6:58 am Just started The Day of the Jackal. Rather enjoyable and very Bond-esque.

Re: What did you watch last night?
After House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween’s 1&2 I decided from that point onwards to not waste my time with anything involving Rob Zombie and a camera.
Garbage.
Garbage.

Re: What did you watch last night?
The Devil's Rejects is outstanding, as is The Lords of Salem. Truly brilliant films, both. Halloween and its sequel deserve more credit than they get (even from Zombie himself). Neither 3 From Hell or The Munsters were entirely successful but I enjoyed them fof what they were nonetheless, and The Haunted World of El Superbeasto was either gloriously rubbish or rubbishly glorious. House of 100 Corpses is a meaningless assault on the eyeballs, yes, but it was Zombie's debut picture so, in a way, it could be forgiven for looking more like one of his music videos than like a coherent movie. So, in a way, 31 has been his only genuine mis-step. And even that's a subjective opinion; he might just be batting 1.000, as our brethren across the pond like to say.

Film 4 Fresh (2022) cannibalism/horror.
Not our usual thing particularly for a Sunday afternoon with a nice pot of tea and almond tarts but enjoyed it, we do like a nice ending.

Deep Purple - The Makning of Machine Head.
A brilliant walts and all doc with contributions from all the band plus the "6th Member" engineer Martin Birch. With insults kept to a very bare minimum, the details how they write their sognes, how they were recorded, where and what they did to make the album so special.
I love it and didn't want it to end.
Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers tour, Melbourne Australia.
One of the last performances of the classic mark 2 DP line up. I'm only half way through but it's shaping up really good. They actually seem to be having fun and playing well at the same time.
I like Deep Purple.

Mentioned I was about halfway through The Penguin and it must be said - if Cristin Milioti is not nominated for acting awards this spring then it’s an injustice.
Colin Farrell is excellent but Milioti (Sofia Falcone) is the driving force of this first season.
She’s been sensational.

Recorded it then deleted it before I could watch it when I realised my 2TB Sky Q hard drive was full .
After a couple of poppy / cover-version albums [ less said about Concerto the better ] Deep Purple got their sh*t together with ' In Rock ' , ' Fireball ' , ' Made In Japan ' then ' Machine Head ' - I bought ' Who Do We Think We Are ' but apart from ' Woman From Tokyo ' it was garbage and that was the end of my Deep Purple days - I did buy and listen to Burn before giving it away to a mate .
' River Deep Mountain High ' was brilliant off of Book Of Taliesin and Hush made it to Hollywood but until In Rock they were still experimenting I'd say . When Gillan replaced Evans that was when the magic started .
Happy Days . I'll do a search when I get home tomorrow .

Re: What did you watch last night?
The last episode of Season 3 of Ted Lasso. As FJ and UTJ said, it was hard work.
It isn't that the whole show was without some merits, there were funny moments, and it raised some important issues, but there were a lot of things that grated on me.
1) I hated the saccharine sweetness of it. And that's probably more of a problem with me than with the show.
2) Ted's folksy wisdom grated on me after a while.
3) The show confronted mental health and other issues whilst completely glossing over characters drinking really heavily - particularly Hannah Waddingham, who was barely without a glass of wine or champagne during the entire show.
4) Juno Temple's character was infantilised - she seemed to dress younger and younger whilst supposedly growing into a businesswoman. Someone should also check on her as I'm no expert but she's so thin that it can't be healthy.

Finished Fight Night: Million Dollar Heist on ITVX
Really good show, based on true events. Centres around the Mohammad Ali v Jerry Quarry fight in Atlanta in the 70s.
Samuel L Jackson, Kevin Hart, Don Cheadle & Taraji P Henson lead a brilliant cast. 8 episodes, flew by, really enjoyed it
