How do you study to go on university challenge? I mean, much of what they know is generic undergrad knowledge, but there’s loads of stuff they get quizzed on that you could only realistically know because you’d researched it deliberately. Is there a big set of encyclopaedia they try to cram read in the lead up? Do they go clicking through every link of Wikipedia?

Guitars are nomally tuned to E A D G B e (from heaviest string to lightest), which when strummed open ( no strings fretted) sounds horrible but allows lots of chords to be fingered easily. Open tuning is when the strings are tuned to a particular chord. Keith Richards uses Open G a lot, so his guitars are tuned D G D G B d, D G and B are the note of the G major chord (he often removed the lowest D string and played with just five). When he strummed the open strings it played a G major chord. The number of chords it's easy to play is reduced but it doesn't matter, the chords that are in the scale of G major are easy to finger and the chords he uses in a typical Stones song are a breeze. It also makes 'vamping' on the chord very effective. Vamping is playing frills and breaks on a chord, Brown Sugar and Honky Tonk Woman are good examples. It's also all but essential for playing slide guitar.

I can give blood in the UK but not in France. Want to know why? Mad cow disease (BSE).
At the end of the usual lifestyle questionnaire ("are you an intravenous drug user? Do you have unprotected bum sex?, Have you visited a country where malaria is endemic etc.), the last question is: Did you spend more than a year in the UK between 1980 and 1996? If so, they don't want it...
