Similarly, why do the Americans say their river names wrong?

In the UK it's always River first then the name, eg River Thames, River Severn etc.

The yanks have it backwards. Mississippi River, Colorado River etc.

Great question - at first I thought it might be something to do with the various nationalities which emigrated to America .

The French put the noun or the name of the river first as in Senne Fluviale [ River Seine ] so I thought the other Romance languages would follow the same pattern [ Italian , Romanian , Portuguese , Spanish ] but no , they don't - all have their individual words for ' river ' before the name of the river . The Germanic languages are the same .
So just the French and the Americans as far as I can make out .
