I remember when I moved during covid when they announced the stamp duty freeze, and all the house prices seemed to jump up by about £15,000 over night.

A quite nice demonstration of how reducing a certain tax burden creates growth and increasing the burden destroys it along with any projected income the treasury thought it was going to receive.
Now obviously in your example that was a lifting of the tax completely. Just imagine if tax was set at a comfortable enough point for both the public and the state.
The trouble with governments and politicians is that they believe that their constant tinkering and intervention is actually going to do anything good. In the case of the successive chancellors its a case that they’re all too far into the woods to see the trees, reversing rises and cuts from their predecessors in increments that won’t encourage meaningful growth or investment to the benefit of the state.

Impossible sendô.

Everyone knows that a sector involving bankers, solicitors, and estate agents as the key players will be ethically policed to the nth degree and no way would they advise their clients to just whack what the buyer was going to pay in stamp duty onto the asking price. No chance.

Some might even call this 'growth'

We've had 75 years of increasing property regulation and property taxation - and house prices and rental prices have sky-rocketed.

If you start to construct barriers to trade and reasons to supply, especially at a time of surging demand, there will be a societal impact.

You have to ask yourself, are you prepared to accept the societal impact as the price of interfering in a free market?

Almost every day, 'socialist' thinkers tell us how terrible the situation is with house prices, young people, tenants etc - that's the societal impact of the desire to tax and regulate - especially in London and the South. Surges in population numbers are the cherry on the top.

Axe the tax.

He strikes me very much as a man of the people when it involves pointing out others flaws. Not so keen on light shining on things on his watch. I realise this just makes him a politician but tbh I wouldn't trust him an inch.

Told not to push for an inquiry he chose his career prospects over Hillsborough and then shouts at others to do something. Kept the mid staffs inquiry small scale and in secret. Proposed to educe those eligible for social care by something like 75%. For me he is one of the biggest charlatans in politics and that's saying something lol.

A labour leader punishing the sick and disabled. He should ashamed of himself. Especially given how they criticise the Tories doing it . . Atlee Bevan Wilson smith benn would be disgusted with it .

Reeves is already onto "efficency savings" thinking that civil service departments have thousands of admin staff who do nothing all day.

In my last job they got rid of all our admin about 10 years ago so instead of me spending all my working day on projects I probably spent 40% of it filing, uploading/downloading drawings, etc instead of being on site etc making decisions, doing quality inspections and so on.

Reeves won't make it to August before Starmer hits the panic button. Even this Labour voter thinks they've been piss poor so far and droning on about 22bn black holes won't wash. Heard it all before hiding behind the last lot.

Keep an ear out for the world has changed. It's going to do a lot of heavy lifting this week.

Anecdotally the upcoming changes to tax and min wage are going to screw a lot of smes I think. Off to another customer on Tuesday that's downsizing ahead of April.

Those changes are nothing compared to the debt Ponzi scheme of reclassifying what an asset is so we can borrow more (and then call that debt an asset as well). All the hallmarks of Browns Enron tribute act.

Said all along reeves would be gone in a year. Once her human shield value runs out. Probably just after the summer recess, unless of course she is right and the economy looks like picking up. Art which point the world changing will be completely forgotten.

Me and the wife sit down this week to sort out her staff wages this week for her small business. Due to the NI raise, she won't be able to offer much of a pay rise as she would like and will probably have to reduce a few days here and there.

bubbles1966 wrote: Fri Mar 21, 2025 12:17 pm Stamp Duty on primary residences should be completely abolished.

No one should be "taxed" for buying a home to live in no matter the cost.

The government should only be paid for the administrative expense it incurs in registering ownership.
A completely outdated and unnecessary tax.

Let’s look at all the major avenues of tax that contribute to being able to buy a house.
Your taxed on :
Income that enables you to afford a house.
Savings from any income that has already been taxed as above.
Stamp Duty on registration of ownership following in from already being taxed on income and savings.
Death - your estate is then taxed again on your passing with the major asset being your home as commonly the greatest contributor within someone’s estate.

Applying tax to the purchase of a primary residence should not be allowed for double taxing purposes.

Surely everything stems from income. Without it a house cannot be afforded in the first place. Tax should only be applied on a sale of a someone with secondary premises gained either through inheritance or for business / landlord purposes. Tax should only really apply to the taxing of profit outside the application of income tax. The taxation of anything else is double taxation.

Then the basic rate of tax needs drastically increasing to justify removing all stealth taxes

Absolutely agree. But not until they’ve all been removed. I don’t trust any government to remove one without applying the other.
The situation we’re currently in is that ALL tax is on the increase, stealth or transparent.

Edit : I’d also like to add that if income is the primary and only factor of taxation then it soups apply at the same rate no matter the size of the income.

That's the issue with this country though. The majority would be massively against any form of income tax increase so stealth taxes exist
