It’s frightening to think that at some point in the future it is likely that people will be saying that things were better in 2026!! Yikes!!Gormalysis wrote: ↑Thu Apr 09, 2026 2:39 pm Everyone seems to talk about how things were better 20 odd years ago (because lets be honest, they were), but it got me thinking. When could it be said that humanity peaked, we had the right amount of technology without it consuming our lives?

Why is historical Georgian era naval literature so bloody compelling?
Why do a sizeable majority of people who roam around town centres the country over look like they'd barely be able to spell their own name?

^^ This. I came back to the UK at xmas and it was grim. Mind you, it was in Staines....
Bovine is the word that springs to mind. The lumpen underclass just grazing, wobbling from Poundland to Gregg's to Lidl to Spoons in a nightmarish slow motion, flaccid human pinball game.

Parking on the hard shoulder is dangerous, we have that drummed into us
However on really busy a roads (like the A2) you have parking that is basically a hard shoulder.. surely that's just as dangerous

I worked in Staines for a decade and it definitely got worse over that time. Was generally okay during the week, but the weekends were a different story. Last time I visited, it was more like being in Mos Eisley spaceport than a Surrey town centre.Toulouse_Iron wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2026 7:45 am ^^ This. I came back to the UK at xmas and it was grim. When I was about 18/19 the company I worked for hired out a pub in Staines and provided some ladies for "entertainment".
It was very fitting for Staines.

If that was early 90s and the ladies' clothes fell off in a beer garden, I might have been there.
You might not be that ancient though
Edit: it would have been the Phoenix in church street.

This would have been early 2000s. About 2003 I think. The pub was closed, it was just all the sparks/plumbers etc from the site we were working on, and these two *ahem* ladies.
Different times tbf.

Looking at several threads on here, do the mods have some sort of software, or ai assistant to manage the sheer amount of posts being posted?
Leave a page and just a few minutes later it's grown by several new pages.
Just can't keep up with it. How do they do it?

When did hanging seasonal wreaths on your door become a thing?

Think you mean 'wreaths' but the term's more associated with funerals. Anyway, yes. Couple of neighbours put out 'autumn' - themed stuff every year.
