Alex Brooker at the lift at St Pancras after yesterday's game. Also Robert De Niro in Cambridge over the weekend. He might have gone to the corn exchange to see The Stranglers though I suspect he was there to address the student debating society on Sunday.

Ian (Stan) was kind of a mate of mine and he asked me to join when their original bass player left. Embarrassingly, Paul had already asked Quentin (Norman Cook). So I told them not to worry, because I thought the band I was I already in was going somewhere.

Fast forward several months and they were on Top of the Pops while I was still playing to half a dozen people in the ****ing back room of the Apple Tree in Crawley.

Bitter? Yes, a pint.
:shocker:

That is a shocker...if we ever meet, the pint is yours :newthumb:

And was Paul cool ?? he always seems to be when you see him interviewed ??

He was (and probably still is) a genuinely decent and likeable feller. Very funny, too.

Seems fitting that this thread should be brought back to the top of the Forum on this day of all days.

On Friday I was waiting in the queue for the departure gates at Malaga airport when I was joined by a flustered looking Scouse fella. We struck up a conversation, as you do, and he told me he'd flown to Spain for two weeks last summer and ended up staying for eight months!

Anyway, he was on his way back home (via Manchester Airport) as he'd finally run out of funds. I asked him what his occupation was and he replied "I'm a painter".

"Oh?" I responded, before adding: "I presume you mean decorator rather than an artist?"

"Well as it goes," he replied, "I'm a sort of artist. In fact I'm in the Guinness Book of Records for my 'art'."

My interest suitably piqued, I enquired as to what for - to which he stated: "I hold the world record for number of public streaks..."

Jokingly, I said: "You're not the fella who ran across the green at the British Open with a sign pointing to your arse with the words 19th hole written on your back, are you?"

"Yes," he laughed. "That's me!"

Turned out I'd inadvertently bumped into Mark Roberts, who has "recorded more than 500 streaks in over 13 countries since his 1993 debut at the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens". Funny fella.

Had a text off my eldest son earlier who was on his way to the beach in Swansea. He had borrowed his younger brother's West Ham training top to wear and when he was walking down the bottom of Wind Street, John Hartson passed him and said 'Come On You Irons' and done the crossed arms to him as well. What a guy :scarfer:
