Really interesting track. Elements of rock AND DnB. Really starting to dig it.

Prompted by my daughter's interest in some of it, I made a nostalgic playlist of the 2000s stuff, mainly indie, that I used to listen to when I lived in Korea.

Nah, that's a great album. I'll be surprised if it doesn't tickle bunk's fancy.

I think Bummed is great too, as a dense, druggy follow-up, but there's a taut snap and crackle to that debut, and, as you say, that odd sensation of a band suddenly arriving on the scene who were totally different to everyone else. I remember taking quite a bit of flak from my indiekid mates for liking it.

When you think of Happy Mondays' e'd up baggy contemporaries - when Squirrel and G-Man came out Primal Scream were recording 60s sunshine pop pastiches on Sonic Glower Groove, James were 2 years away from Sit Down, ditto for The Stone Roses and Fools Gold, the Soup Dragons were still trying to be the Buzzcocks, and Blur, the Charlatans and the Inspiral Carpets weren't even formed.

In 87, the only other indie guitar groups who were remotely dancey that I can think of were things like The Shamen's Jesus Loves Amerika (the vocals on the chorus of that are quite similar to Shaun Ryder actually!) and Age Of Chance.

Manchester did of course however have New Order and A Certain Ratio as bands that came before The Mondays with dance-related influences, but your point is well made.

One of my close mates went to a Mondays gig before me (we were both away from Sept '87 at different unis) and I remember he reported back the experience with this wide-eyed recollection along the lines of everyone dancing but leaving a bit of space around themselves and not 'slamming' (as we called moshing in those days).

I went that month, or a little later, to see them in Manc, because a different friend was living up there. The walls dripped with sweat and, again, surprising, the smell of weed (not hash) was almost over-powering. It was an amazing gig.

I saw them supporting James in Liverpool - someone mentioned that tour on the Paul Ryder thread - there was definitely a lot of excitement considering they were a 'support' band.

First time I saw the Mondays was revelatory.

I'd been playing in a band that were unashamed Josef K and ACR copyists. As wannabe footy casuals we were totally obsessed with Jorge Ben's Brazilian 1976 punk funk football gigantico Ponta de Lanca, and were incompetently trying to rip that off as well.

We went to see the Mondays (with the Weather Prophets at the Clarendon) a couple of weeks after Freaky Dancin came out, and it was like every song they played sounded exactly like what we wanted to be. We were simultaneously "balls, that's our idea" and "god, this mob are ****ing brilliant".

I can definitely still hear a lot of the early Mondays in this. Even Bez's maracas....
