On smiling, had a first sight this year of a pair of local fox cubs, just as I walked in from work tonight. Beautiful colouring.

This bloke and woman were having a row in front of a bunch of kids, and then the bloke gave her a proper clump, a few times. Eventually a copper turned up and ended up having to lay into the bloke with his baton, but the feller wrestled it off him and started whacking the copper with it.
Then a crocodile showed up and stole all the sausages while the bloke shouted "That's the way to do it!".
Not illegal, then or now but not very advisable, apparently. The Old Man of Storr wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2023 6:40 pm When I was a student at Hatfield Poly I'd regularly see this bloke taking out his pet fox out on a lead through the Hilltop shopping centre .
Would that be legal now I wonder ?
Yeah, I was going to put it in NUMB but I couldn't find a supporting report anywhere.
On one of our several walks recently we saw a young lad out walking his collie dog and got chatting to him [ we'd met him before a couple of months back - a young boy who'd moved up to Skye to be with his Mum and Stepfather ] - the conversation turned to dogs and I happened to mention meeting another young lad with this beautiful husky type dog , could have been a Malamute , gorgeous looking dog , all white which placed itself right next to me as we sat next to the River Findhorn - the young lad then went on to tell us about some man he knew from his Derbyshire days who kept wolves and had one as a ' Pet ' - he added it wasn't advisable to keep a wolf as a pet . I tried looking this bloke up without success so whether the story was true or not I wasn't able to verify but I had no reason to doubt this young man . I then went on to look up folk in the US who had kept wolves as pets - I can confirm it's unwise to keep a wolf as a pet as much as I'd like one along with a black panther or a jaguar .
I'm sure I read something about this recently. It might be something connected to new attitudes to hedgerow and other similar spaces and their being more likely than not left to grow. This increases cover for small mammals, but, obviously, in due course, increases too the amount of live food for the kind of birds you're now seeing more of up where you are.The Old Man of Storr wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2023 6:40 pm When I was a student at Hatfield Poly I'd regularly see this bloke taking out his pet fox out on a lead through the Hilltop shopping centre .

Used to have a fox regularly visit Jen's parents' garden in Corringham , not seen one on Skye for years possibly decades .
But speaking of birds , I've seen more eagles this year [ and it's only June just ] than I have in the past 34/35 years we've been here - could be I'm going out more but we've seen quite a few on Skye [ mixture of Golden and Sea Eagles ] and one in Lossiemouth [ huge sea eagle ] - saw 2 x Ospreys fishing the River Lossie while walking along the bank [ early May ] and one [ a female ] in its nest at Loch Garten last week albeit through binoculars .

Google maps took us a funny route home from Cornwall to Surrey on friday night. We normally go A303/M3, but it kept us on the M5. Assumed we'd join the M4 and go that way, but it took us off somewhere around Taunton and through Somerset, including a drive through the wonderfully-named Fivehead. Have to say, Somerset is a county I barely know, but I was struck by how pretty much of it was - little villages & hamlets with some incredible views. Can imagine it's a proper paradise this time of year.
