Why are young cats called kittens, yet the jungle cat variety are called cubs?

Good question. I think that there are quite a number of animals (probably mammals) that have young referred to a 'kits' - an otter for instance - but don't know the hard and fast rule (there may not be one, in fact).westham, eggyandchips wrote: ↑Sun Jan 16, 2022 12:17 pm Why are young cats called kittens, yet the jungle cat variety are called cubs?

Thank you for the one sensible and helpful reply Sendo!sendô wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 3:22 pm https://www.southernliving.com/healthy- ... -9-minutes
It turns out that the seemingly arbitrary allotment actually pays homage to clockmakers of a bygone era. According to Mental Floss, before digital clocks, engineers were restricted to nine minute snooze periods by the gears in a standard clock. They could either set the snooze for a little more than nine minutes, or a little more than 10 minutes. And because the consensus was that 10 minutes was too long, and could allow people to fall back into a "deep" sleep, clock makers decided on the nine-minute gear.

Re: Things you've always wanted to know......
without going into a truckload of details, essentially my girlfriend's twin brother does barely a thing to look after their Nan leaving me and the Mrs to do everything 6days a week and sometimes 7 when he CBA on a Sunday. I basically have to sort all her appointments, take her places during the week so I have essentially lost a chunk of earnings as a self-employed person. It's not the Old Dear's fault so I want to invoice the estate with the proviso anything I claim is made up of 85% of his inheritance because his laziness has caused this.

Yep, don't really have much choice after the battering my nethers have taken over the past few years with radiation and surgery. It does the job it's meant to do, but has this horrid side effect of giving me a rotten headache the next day.
Probably not.
