He was a joy to watch when fit and firing, that just wasn’t the case very often.

I’d like to see him do well at Newcastle. You can bet that when we go to St James’ and if he plays, our back line will not enjoy it one bit. He’s exactly the type of player we seem to struggle against ourselves.

Bloody awful signing but I’d be chuffed for him if he can score for Newcastle this weekend. He should really have been with them his whole career - it’s a shame for him the way his career panned out, and not just the injuries.

Interested to know why you'd think that? Had he not been as injury prone as he ended up being, he'd probably have had a decent career with other clubs.

He was having to live with Kevin Nolan up there after his domestic. More than likely if he'd stayed at Newcastle he'd either be inside or 6 foot under

The Liverpool move ruined his confidence. The price tag, along with replacing Torres created a wholely unrealistic set of expectations for a limited player who was never going to do what they wanted/needed as they weren't set up for him.

Moving to us should have been a good move for him given the manager and philosophy we were employing at the time. It should have been the chance he needed to rebuild himself. Instead the injuries set in, compounded by his general unwillingness to look after himself like an athlete has dragged what was a promising career into the dirt.

I always liked him. Hope he gets a couple of goals for them this year.

We love looking back on the careers of players like Best, Gascoigne and Mersin with fondness, but don’t allow modern and current players any faux pas. Even our own legendary World Cup wining skipper was having his own battles that would dwarf anything that Carroll has got up to. Carroll injury problems have been horrific and we were paying him too much, but I was always fond of him and he seemed t9 genuinely care about West Ham.

I hope he scores a winner against anyone other than us.

Hope your not comparing him in any way or form to Best! think the conditions George played under pitches and even the ball, he may have had personal problems, but no one can deny he was Truly Special!
