Re: Superhero ( & sci-fi / other relevant) films
First episode of Ms Marvel is out, and it's OK, but usual Marvel slow first episode establishing the characters. Not sure how widespread the interest is going to be on this one - it's more like Lizzie Maguire with superpowers (which probably won't mean anything to you unless you had kids growing up around 15-20 years ago, come to think about it), so maybe more for teenagers/YA market than aging nerds

He obviously has a huge audience, but I can't be the only one who when he sees Dwayne Johnson starring in something, instantly dismisses it out of hand?

I quite him in his limited way. Jumanji reboots are pretty good (his relationship with Hart is solid) - obviously not a patch on the original. Skyscraper is fine (paint by numbers) and he is great in Pain & Gain.

Re: Superhero ( & sci-fi / other relevant) films
He's a bit of a throwback action star isn't he, in that he essentially just plays Duane "The Rock" Johnson in every film. That said, it's not so much (for me anyway) that he's so one-note, it's more how much he then goes on to dominate proceedings. Will Black Adam be a DC superhero movie or will it be a Rock movie?
Have to hand it to him though, he's come an awfully long way - as a wrestling superstar and as a Hollywood superstar - with a decidedly limited skill set in both industries.

I caught Hawkman and Atom Smasher, but any ideas who beardy dude is supposed to be? He was putting on a red helmet with what looked like lighning strikes down the side, but it was a very short snippet
EDIT: apparently that's Dr Fate, but the helmet in that brief scene looked completely different

Re: Superhero ( & sci-fi / other relevant) films
My daughter asked me to watch it with her, so I did. Yeah, it’s got ‘after school special’ (don’t know if you lot had these shows in the UK) Marvel vibe. Live action ‘into the spiderverse’ vibe to it. It was very creative visually, and I liked the core group of actors. And it was funny. My daughter is 14, and emotionally maybe a little younger than that, and she liked it a lot. I probably won’t continue to watch this, unless she asks me to again. Any time hanging out with the teen girl is bonus time. All that said, this episode was better than Kenobi ep 4, which we watched immediately afterward.Kludgehammer wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 10:54 am First episode of Ms Marvel is out, and it's OK, but usual Marvel slow first episode establishing the characters. I’m rather keen on this Black Adam flick. He’s an interesting character, but as LC notes, I’d rather it was a comic book flick than a Rock flick.

From the deep darkness of the first film to a musical with Lady Gaga ?????
I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April 1st

I'm guessing (ie hoping to Christ) it means there'll just be an isolated musical sequence such as, say, Harley daydreaming about her beloved Mr. J, perhaps when she first claps eyes on him or something. A bit like:

Tbh, they should just leave it alone. There needn’t be a Joker 2. Sometimes leaving well enough alone is the best call. Joker was an interesting study on mental health and societal degradation. Job done. Film should be about that. Doesn’t need any augmentation, imo.

said loads of times, some films don't need
a) a sequel
b) a remake
maybe it's just the filmakers being really lazy, jumping on a revenue heavy film and hope that they can bring in the same amount of money from either or both of the above.
some times it really works. I'm purely guessing that in most cases it doesn't.
it might make money at the b-o which I suppose if the idea, but sometimes it just ruins the original.
now, it's fine with the original concept of a triology or maybe a film that could need more than one film e.g. Dune, Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit or similar to tell the true story, although I think both LotR and The Hobbit could have been condensed.
films like John Wick or the Matrix I suppose are just franchise movies, like F & F, M-I, but to be honest they can all be taken as a one off, I don't feel that I need to watch any originals to watch any of the subsequent films to "understand" any of them.
some though are "done to death" and stopped way before they actually do.
where was I going with this ?
