Re: Trump
Reminds me of Senator Palpatine from the Star Wars films.
Just what we want, another ultra right winger who supports the idea the Biden election was wrong.

Re: Trump
Lost a third time. GOP showing how their leadership is going to behave until the next election. They're a mess. This is more interesting to watch than the Arsenal match. It's the front of house struggle for the party on prime time.

Re: Trump
I put this here as he was inspired by trump.
George Santos said he decided to get into politics after he saw what trump did.
So the 34 year old ran on the Republican ticket for a seat in Long Island. In a surprise he won, flipping the area from Democrats.
After his victory a local paper did a background check & found the following.
Santos said his grandparents were Jewish people who escaped the holocaust & fled to Brazil (where his parents came from). Complete lie.
He's described himself as a Jewish Brazilian American. After no history of Judaism was found in his background he claimed he actually said he was "Jew-ish" The seat he ran for has a heavily Jewish population.
He's gay but he was married to a woman until 3 years ago (almost certainly a Green Card wedding).
He claimed to have graduated from a top prep school & a top university (they had no record) & said he worked on Wall Street for Citicorp & Goldman Sachs, both of whom deny these claims.
He said he owns at least 13 properties. He doesn't, but he has lots of outstanding rent overdue on past apartments he's rented.
There's a warrant out for him in Brazil for stealing a chequebook.
He claimed his mum was a top financial expert who was in the South Tower on 9/11 & died a few years later from illnesses sustained during that attack. She was actually a house cleaner who didn't speak very good English.
After her death a local Catholic church raised money for her funeral. He used the money to go skiing.
He says he has a pet rescue non profit charity but one was never listed even though he hosted a fund raiser & took donations.
He said that four of his employees died in the gay nightclub attack in Orlando in 2016. He made that up, he had no employees or connection to the dead.
There's also a whole slew of dodgy financial transactions which are all $1 less than the amount where he'd have to disclose it. Plus millions of dollars were put into his campaign by a brand new company that they haven't been able to trace yet.
He said he'd been diagnosed with a brain tumour & was receiving radiation treatment. Also not true.
He said he was at the Capitol building on January 6th then denied it but did say he'd written a hefty cheque to pay for defences for the insurgents.
So now he's in Congress making laws & changing America's path. Obviously Democrats have been calling him out to resign, while Republicans stayed silent. Today was his first day & apparently he was shunned by the rest of his party, sitting alone while the others got chummy
I've got to be honest, you've got to respect the man for pulling this off. And you have to wonder why no one researched his background BEFORE the election.

Re: Trump
He'd still pass the fit and proper person test in the Championship.
He got to vote today for SOH. Once that is decided, the GOP will kick him to the kerb. I think.

McCarthy loses seventh vote. Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz nominated Trump as speaker.

Re: Trump
In case anyone was wondering why the wingnuts are so steadfastly obstructing, the apparently side lined wing nut explains here in a mini rant.

Re: Trump
Colorado's 3rd Congressional District to thank for all of this. This is a bold play by the wingnut fringe. Even though they are overwhelmingly outnumbered, they can block this vote for a little while longer before serious legislation needs to be discussed. Plus, staffers don't get paid until this is all resolved. The goal appears to be to bargain themselves into committees of power while requiring people they dislike to be kicked off committees, and to do away with rules that would enable the Speaker to silence them in the Chamber. Even though they're few in numbers, they know that being able rant and rage wherever and whenever they like will make it seem like they have more power than they do. They are bullying Congress and Congress is failing for the moment. It'll be curious to see what the House Dems do. Dem nominee Jeffries continues to have the most votes in every vote. What will the Dems do? Hold pat? Bargain with McCarthy? An alternative for the majority party is to try to change the policy that dictates when the threshold has been reached to appoint SOH. They could try and change the threshold from a minimum requirement of votes to a majority of votes. Problem for them is that McCarthy would lose that as well at the moment.

^^^Can the majority party change the voting system before the house can sit?
In other unsurprising news, McCarthy loses another vote.

Whatever your opinion of AOC, her explanation of what’s going on is enlightening and interesting. Or it is to me at any rate

As Pete explained, they're each being thrown crumbs of power/relevance because without it they just go back to regular lives.Johnny Byrne's Boots wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 5:49 pm McCarthy on the brink?
