Part of me is envious of the new generation that never experienced the old place, as there’s nothing for them to compare the LS to which may negatively affect the way they view it. The other half of me wouldn’t dream of swapping positions with them as I cherish the years I had at UP.
For the sake of balance, I took my nephew to his first game last season (6 years old), and he loved it. He loves everything about the stadium, and has a big poster of it up in his room. To him, he’ll know nothing else and will have his own memories of that place which will feel special to him over his life.
There are some easy wins the club could do to make it feel like home for the “legacy fans”, starting from when you come out the station and walk to the ground. They’re just not bothered.

Don’t mind him, he’s a bit of a Lawro.
I’m very slightly younger than you and I feel the exact same. I was privileged to have had a handful of years as a ST holder at the old place before we moved and the experience for me is night and day and, in truth, that’s likely never going to change, no matter what steps are taken. I’m not suggesting it won’t get better, but it’ll never be the same.

I hear that logic. That said, I ultimately feel sorry for them for not experiencing the many wonderful games under the lights at the old gaff when it was at it's best. I consider myself as one of the lucky one's to witness so many.

We await your review of the stadium Dan!
I'm having a tough time separating the day from the stadium experience. Was brilliant to catch up with old faces, and I was genuinely surprised by how quickly I was able to get there - just over an hour door to door from Weybridge (train to Waterloo, then the Jubilee to Stratford). Game wasn't the most exciting, it's fair to say, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't think the new stadium was great. View in 104 was fine. Suspect the atmosphere is significantly better on bigger game days, though.
Given how nice the weather was, and how generally smoothly everything went - yeah, I liked it. But I need to go to a few more games before I make a real judgement.

My boys love it. My eldest reckons it's much better than the old ground.
But they don't have the same memories of the old ground that us old gits do.
And, isn't that only right? My two boys and nieces and nephews think the same. They will make their own memories and it is unfair, I feel, to selfishly impose our outdated views on them. The Boleyn was great in my youth 60's to 90's but s**t thereafter (IMHO).
I think the Boleyn was great and it's surrounding area gave the club and match day such a character.
But I think the LS is building it's own feel and whilst it's different to the old girl it is beginning to feel like home.
I definitely feel like the stadium can be retro fitted to a more football style once we own it.
Who knows we may actually relish being in a strange cobbled together stadium compared to the perfect precise modern stadia that all clubs will soon have.

that sums it all up for me . The Boleyn was never the same once it went all seater in 94 .

absolutely agree, I'm not sure why going all seater had a particularly negative effect, although if I'm honest I didn't think all the Boleyn was great but the chicken run was terrific, mainly because the big steps allowed me to see properly!

Been thinking that for a while. I came to West Ham moire or less because of Upton Park. But it's entirely possible the LS will, in 5, 10 years or so, fall into the "weird enough to be cool again" category. Some fixes need to happen for that, however.
Pathetic indeed. While football fans continue to behave like this they can expect to be treated like people who behave like that. Police escorts to and from grounds, no drinking in their seats, no standing, segregation because they can't behave like grown ups.
What do they think that behaviour achieves?

It really bothers me that in this case it hit the 61 year old but how close was this to hitting his wife or kid?
If you throw something does it not bother you that you'll likely hit an innocent?
Talking about things being thrown, one of there supporters threw a pair of what looked Beats headphones at towards 113 - they didn't make the stand and were grabbed by a steward.
Not that I am wanting to excuse our idiotic fans who threw objects, but both sides were at it. The Blackburn fans were throwing bottles at us from the first 6mins of the game down in sections 112 / 113. Even the Great Wall of Stratford couldn't protect us.
