R.I.P Francois, was a real quality player who you could see immediately was a step up for us. Loved Mr Lyall but like all managers one of the few things that used to infuriate me was seeing him stuck out wide when he was a great finisher down the middle! Condolences to his family and friends.

Re: Francois van der Elst R.I.P.
I remember thinking 'who?' when he signed, I was only 10 and didn't have much of an idea of football outside of what was written in the back of the paper regarding West Ham. My stepdad and his mates seemed to think he was pretty good. Fortunately I was lucky enough to get to see him play and from first hand experience I can say he was a bit special.
RIP Frankie

Very sad day. Will the club have a minute silence vs Palace?
Cracking player. Condolences to his family & friends.

In a modern era in which we have fielded a team with only two English players, it is hard to think back to an era in which Van Der Elst's signing was almost exotic.
Very sad news

I met him in the Millers when I was introduced by one of the Belgian Irons. A real nice bloke. A true gentleman and a great player. Very sad to hear it. RIP Frankie.
Re: Francois van der Elst R.I.P.
He provided me with one of the most surrealist moments watching West Ham - Everyone chatting away and jumping up and down to keep warm at the Vetch (Swansea) when he chipped Dai Davies from pretty much the centre circle , there was a deadly silence when we all tried to compute what had just happened, before going ****ing mental!!
RIP.
RIP.

For Hammers of a certain age,he will always have a special place.Loved him as a kid in a period of supporting West Ham that,in my life, will probably be my favourite time.RIP Francois.

Was one of the few to have the privilege of seeing FVDE score a sublime hat-trick in the mud at Notts County one cold December night in 1982.
From memory we were 0-3 down until Frankie worked his magic
RIP Francois.
