Never seen you play (bit to young for that), but i'll never forget the trips to West Ham with you and the Belgian Irons.
The way you talked about West Ham and football in general showed what a great man you where.
RIP Swat

Very sad indeed. His name brings back so many good associations with club and my younger days.

Re: Francois van der Elst R.I.P.
sad news and my condolences for all the VdE family.
graced us with his beauty on several occasions and my fondest memory of him was at the old Brighton & Hove ground early 1980'2 (we lost) when I was right near the front and he acknowledge us all with a wide grin after mis-controlling a simple pass into a throw-in.

Brilliant player, destroyed us in 1976 and seemed to me to be on a different level to some of our players when he joined.
Gutted when he left us after only a short time,I always thought he could on to be one of our all time greats.
I know he used to come over with our Belgian fans most seasons.
Also he was the same age as me,hits home a little bit.
RIP Frankie

Seems like just a short while ago when he was doing those trademark dashes towards goal. Where have all the years gone since? So excited when John Lyall signed him that Christmas Eve. One of my favourite foreign Hammers. RIP Francois.

Funny how you remember where you were when you heard that certain players had signed for West Ham , for me it was Hatfield Train Station on my way to London , probably the Evening Standard .
