Sent Off With 'Bubbles'

Post by ChikinRun »

Had my dad's funeral yesterday....he was from another era in the East End, born and raised in Wellstead Road East Ham in the late twenties and through the thirties and war years. I did a brilliant thing of filming him telling his evocative stories of the old east end over the last two years and gave his grandchildren a little memory stick yesterday...can recommend doing that.
We said goodbye to him to 'Bubbles' by Vera Lynnn (of course an East Ham girl).... Not a dry eye in the house.
Just wanted to share the day with you all....he was a proud old school east end lad, from another time, and in many ways from a lost place, and West Ham through and through.
RIP Reggie.

Sorry for your loss mate, and can echo was CF said, nice touch about the tapes for the grand kids, and then I'm sure their kids and so on for generations.
When my old man died, last song was an instrumental of bubbles, after a few seconds, people started humming along, then singing, then a full blown out rendition by 150 or so people.
RIP Reggie. :crest:

Sorry for your loss ChikinRun.
We sent my old Dad off with bubbles nearly 6 years ago now.
You wont ever stop missing him, but it does get easier with time.

Nice one CR. Fantastic you got that record of your dad's memories.

We're all shuttling off to bubbles ain't we? Buried my mate Chris last month. C and B casket with the crest on and bubbles ringing around the crem. Everyone had to wear a football shirt - plenty of others there particularly Spurs and gooners (Chris was from Herts) but they were got out sung and out-drunk. Chris would have been proud. To CR's dad, Chris (who was far too young at 60
To go) and all those good hammers we'll lose this year.

RIP fellow Hammer - my Grandad was sent off in exactly the same way mate. I didn't cry at either of my other 3 Grandparents' funerals but when that started playing I was in floods.

Thanks fellow hammers for the wonderful sentiments, much appreciated and moving for me...you all seem to 'get it'. Sorry Chalks, I'm the son of my father and almost as old school...dunno how to post the little films...if anyone can help out, I'd be happy to share them....ten in all, around 5 to 7 minutes each. Only regret is I wish now I had done more of them....he had so many, most of them just gentle funny memories of a bygone era in an area we all love...and one shocker.
