matches being postponed may well help us

dec was great second half. seemed to trust downes more as thegame went on and lanzini went off.

he was behind downes for MOTM though .

was like having two rice`s out there last night. brilliant performances

I'd hate to have to predict anything just now.
Seasons don't work like that.

Assessments of a teams performance can be divided over early and late season.

We were not playing to the standard of a top 6 team following Ogbonna's injury, and haven't yet this term. We need the new boys to improve us.Let's hope they can, but at the moment they are unproven.

If they and Paqueta can build up an understanding, our midfield could turn out to be pretty damn good

Not quite but what Flynn may well be is the perfect player to allow us to get the best of both worlds out of Declan.

Most agree that using him as a full-on true box-to-box doesn’t give us enough defensive protection. Especially with Soucek partnering, who is prone to roam about up the pitch himself.

Most also agree that asking Rice to be a strictly sit in front of the defence no matter what DM is severely limiting his unique ability to break and drive with the ball at speed, something which resulted in many big time goals and chances for us last season.

What Downes may do is provide a strong press-resistant DM option to shield the defence, take the ball from the defence, and always be within 10 yards or so of Rice. Soucek is a very useful player for us and will remain so, but he can’t do those things reliably.

Rice playing alongside Downes with Paqueta in front allows us to have two strong ball retaining and ball playing DMs nominally, but also in reality affords Rice the opportunity to use his talents and take us forward too without worrying about us being exposed.

The Rice-Paqueta-Fornals link up leading to chances like Antonio’s fluffed shot being an example of this.

That’s the thing AH, it isn’t just about who partners Rice but also having better players around him generally.

I agree in terms of that triangle; a few really good moves which will hopefully increase the more they play together.

I noticed a couple of times in the first half that Rice got tackled trying to drive with the ball as the opposition knew what he was going to do. Having Fornals, and to a lesser extent in this match Paqueta to play a one-two with just put that element of doubt in their minds and created much more space for him to play in. Lanzini just wasn’t finding space to offering himself and it isn’t Cornet’s game.

Also looked like we went more to a 433 with Downes sitting in the second half which helped Rice as well. As you say, we cannot really do that with Soucek in the sitting role.

He's hardly grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and dragging us forward

Goal he half heartedly went for the ball he should be winning

If anything rice is as off form as we are.

Not sure. I thought he was very good today. He’s the only player who shows consistent quality for us.

He’s clearly frustrated and I don’t blame him.

Just doesn't show enough maturity to be captain for me

Think he was just made captain to help keep him at the club which isn't a good basis to have a leader

Easy to captain a 'successful' side, now imagine how hard Nobes has had it for the majority of his career.

He's a great player for this club, but as a proper captain he's got it all to prove.

Might help to stop playing him in midfield by himself.

He was captain on the pitch for 90%+ of last season, I'm not sure that's the issue

He will undoubtedly be missing Noble about the place, as will many others.

People like ogbonna and cresswell I'd trust more off the pitch with the added responsibility of captian

Rice is all fine for the camera putting his armband on and looking flash but he is inexperienced.

He even alluded in a video I watched to him finding it weird the texts from the other players now he is in charge of everything

Noble shielded him from a lot it seemed.

Anyone still think we'll get £150M for Rice?
