Any boardgamers?

Post by WHU_Del »

I've got a few mates that play, but they live quite far away so don't have the opportunity to play with them, but have been thinking about some solo games.
I'm not really into the fantasy/horror stuff which seems very popular. I like the dystopian/alternative futures scenarios, if anyone remembers an old Games Workshop game called "Chainsaw Warrior" I loved that.
"Tiny Epic Galaxies" looks like it should be fun, and also "Hostage Negotiator".
Anyone on here play?

Yup but not regularly. I go to Ireland a couple of times a year to play as well as go to Dragonmeet and any other con I can get to to play. I've recently tried to get into solo gaming - Escape The Dark Castle and 4 Against Darkness (not your cup of tea - both fantasy) but its not my bag.

I've played Scythe in Ireland with 6 people - we played for 5 hours and no one was even close to winning so we gave up. Captain Sonar is great fun, Quartermaster General is a great WEW2 game and if you like dystopian futures there's the Fallout 4 game, Hellboy and a lot of the Zombie games are of that style.

BTW TEG and Hostage negotiator can be played solo.

Cheers
Didn't realise there was a Fallout game. I've seen Scythe highly recommended and can be played solo, so I might have a look at that as well. Also found that there's a specialist shop not too far away. Think I'll pay a visit for more advice!

Chainsaw Warrior was great fun, and the only GW set I ever played.

So I went to the local boardgame shop. Bloody hell new games are expensive!
There wasn't much that appealed that I could really afford, so was pretty much writing it off as a non-starter, but then a mate suggested 'print and play', which, as it suggests, are games that you print off all the cards, boards, tokens etc. at home and stick together yourself, along with a few counters or dice.
Found loads, and even better a lot of them are free! Yes, it'll cost in printer ink, but better than £50-60 for a boxed game that you might not like in the end.

Available as a phone game on iOS and Android, although I've not played it.

Especially when you print them at the office.

I've only played Blood Bowl on the computer and it was fun. We had a mini-league and it got very competitive for a bit. I came second if I remember rightly with my undead team.

Scythe is excellent. Probably my favourite, though I rarely play it solo.

Look up ‘This War of Mine’ for an immersive solo game. Very dark, but sounds like it might be your kind of theme.

Where is your local?
Check out online game stores. Significantly cheaper. There’s an awesome price comparison site https://boardgameprices.co.uk/ and the 2nd hand market is pretty decent.
