Re: RIP Dad
Sorry for your loss, DA. He sounded like a dad worthy of the title (many aren't, of course. Mine certainly isn't/wasn't). You've written a beautiful tribute.
RIP

Re: RIP Dad
Sorry to hear about your Dad DA.
Dementia/Alzheimers has taken loads of my family on my dad's side. It's true b*stard of a disease.
Keep those memories though mate. My own dad is a good guy but a closed book emotionally, so we aren't really close like it sounds you were with your dad.
He's an Arsenal fan too, so I was never going to get the father son matchday experience with him either.

Re: RIP Dad
I lost my dad under similar circumstances nearly 3 years ago. Despite the hurt, the pain and me going off the rails, it was the most compassionate thing that could have happened. Dementia is a **** of a condition that causes the victim to lose all sense of who they are and a lot of upset for loved ones.
It is no doubt a cliche, but time is a good heeler. Mrs RR (she lost her parents within 18 months of one another and 6 months before we were married) was 100% on the money when she said your memories become a lot clearer and more frequent. Not a day goes by without me thinking about my old man.
Losing my old man has changed me no doubt and I like to think for the better. It's given me a perspective that we're not here forever so don't sweat the small stuff.
DA Senior was obviously an upstanding fella, so I'll raise a glass and wish him godspeed.

Sorry for your loss DA.
My old man passed away over a decade ago, and I still think back often as to when he first started taking me over to West Ham in the old chicken run.
Condolences to you and your family.

Don't waste time dreading it, Eggy. Unless you go before them, it's the nature of things that our folks go first.westham, eggyandchips wrote:I don't know you or your dad. But personally its unimaginable to lose either of my parents.
Enjoy all you can with them, tell them you love them, thank them for everything that you want to & ask them about (& maybe record), their earliest memories.

The loss of a parent can be an extremely difficult time but the memories are where its at.

Sorry for your loss DA. Sound loke a good bloke has gone.
I was lucky enough to be able to tell my Dad I loved him and to say goodbye and thanks before he died, and I still think about him every day, nearly 5 years later.

Make no mistake, I enjoy every minute with them, even if they do my head now and again.Samba wrote: Don't waste time dreading it, Eggy. Unless you go before them, it's the nature of things that our folks go first.

Re: RIP Dad
Thanks for all the thoughts and condolences - very much appreciated. We said our farewells to him on Wednesday. The exit music was "Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye" by Vera Lyn, who also came from East Ham.

Re: RIP Dad
DA, will leave this here for another week, for people to pay their respects, then will move to our memorial garden forum.
Again, you have my sympathies
