RIP Dad
My dad passed away peacefully last night, just a few days short of his 93rd birthday, following a long battle with dementia, though it was pneumonia that eventually took him.
Born and raised in an upstairs flat in McCauley Road (if you know where the Central is, you know where McCauley Road is), he - along with his father and brother - were regular visitors to the Boleyn. He was at the 1964 and 1965 Wembley finals.
Although having a family slowed down his attendances, he used to use visits to my granny to pop along to a few games. I remember as a little kid on these occasions standing on the outside balcony of the flat to listen to the noise of the crowd and try to guess the score from the roars. Growing up in the 60's in a West Ham family (my mum's side were Hammers too) and with those mid-sixties triumphs, it was inevitable I'd follow suit, and Dad took me to my first match in the season following the World Cup win. We stood that day in the old cage in the North-West corner. It was a 2-2 draw, and although I don't remember much about the game itself, I was excited by the buzz and intensity of the crowd and Dad had ensured another generation would follow in the family footsteps.
The last game Dad attended was a 2-3 defeat at home to Wimbledon in 1986. But I was a season ticket holder by then, and Dad was always keen to hear my match reports after games. During the latter stages of his dementia (horrible, horrible bitch of a disease that is) when he was bed-ridden, with a scrambled memory and when he often wouldn't recognise his own family members, every so often he would call out "Up the Hammers", or would want to know when the next game was.
RIP Dad

Nice memories there DA.
Very fitting that as a life long West Ham fan, your dad's last match attended was a loss.

One of the many things you have of your dad are memories of going to games with him. My Dad was never into football, so I could never share that pleasure.

I share your pain DA....
Lost my darling mum to dementia in March.
Since that day, nothing has been the same. Nor will it ever be.

Re: RIP Dad
Sad new DA. I bet he had a fair few stories to tell about not only about our beloved Hammers but also growing up in the East End.
