2019 General Election

Post by E7Iron »

With Labour agreeing for a General Election, I thought it would be good to create a separate thread to discuss the election! My bet is another hung parliament.

Tories biggest party, no overall majority. Labour to lose a few seats.

BxP won't get anything.

Hung parliament would be my bet and god knows where from there.

I am not convinced the public will really buy into Johnson for 5 more years. I think they would stomach him to get Brexit done.

I think having a GE before Brexit brings Farage into play, and the gamble from Labour would be that he'd eat into the Tory vote more than their own.

Excellent, a General Election really will sort this mess out once and for all.....

Said, no-one.

Can’t see the turnout for this being high.

Pinky may need to lock this again. Talk now that the bill will be blocked in the same way the WAB was.

Looks like Labour want the voting age reduced to 16 and allow EU citizens to vote in the UK General Election in December if it get's through.

I'm glad I don't live on their planet.....

They are going to get a kicking, under 18s are more likely to vote Green anyway

As for EU citizens, hoping to capture the vote by promising more free money that doesn't exist

The votes at 16 seems to be an ongoing trend that's grown legs over the years.

They let 16 year olds vote in 2014 in the Scottish referendum.

There's a lack of joined-up-thinking regarding voting age, drinking age, pay tax as an adult age and so on.

Vote at 16 amendment tabled. Looking at the sponsors it looks to be more about a possible 2nd referendum than this election.

I don't think they will get a vote on franchise changing amendments 6 weeks before an election. I support the principle but it would be daft to do it now.

I think this is going to be a wild ride. So many variables. labour leave seats, Brexit v Tory, resurgent LDs.

I can't believe that they are considering votes for 16 year olds when they are not allowed to:

Leave school and find work (unless an apprentice)
Get married without parental consent
Buy alcohol
Buy cigarettes
Buy (or star in) porn mags/films
Gamble (lottery excluded)
Join the Armed Forces and go to war
Earn a living wage (under 18's rate is £4.35 per hour; £3.90 for apprentices)
Work in a bar or bookies
Hold a driving licence for a car

etc etc

Let them grow up first.
I'd make the age 21 and then make it compulsory!

Too soon to try to get something passed giving 16 year olds the vote. I'm all for it but it needs completely overwhelming support from the public lest it just become a wedge issue used to entrench people on one side of the other.

The minimum amount of money the government has spent on no deal Brexit preparations would equate to around £3 million per constituency.
