The regular bleed of downing street party revelations might start to look a bit contrived and lose their impact if this latest birthday one is anything to go by.
People already working in a building together and gathering once again with a cake within the same building and within working hours doesn’t sound in the same order of shocking.

Because the rest of us were allowed to do that at the time, weren't we?

Wonder if that was due to a court case pending from The Good Law Project?

I've plenty of sympathy for the Met & Commissioner Dick, I can understand the constables charged with protecting No.10 security not wanting to intervene on what was going on....they probably imagined their fate if they did (remembering pleb-gate not so long ago), and I can understand the senior officers like Dick wanted to stay distant for fear of it being seen as political.....but they probably never factored in someone as brazen and plainly disrespectful of rules, whether he concocts them or not, as the Liar Johnson.

Like our constitution a lot of this depends on the 'good chap' assumption, that anyone who reaches high-office knows the seriousness of the position and what is acceptable and what isn't....they both have no playbook for dealing with an entitled incompetent child running amok through it all.

So yesterday's ludicrous situation where police officers were helping with Sue Grays inquiries is now being corrected it looks like it's curtains on this clown show.

The Cabinet Office have just announced (BBC News) they will not publish the Gray report until the Met investigation has concluded.

That's handy...

Johnny - I did think that would be the case - bit of Johnson/Dick collusion or a bona fide investigation ?

I suspect it's a real investigation forced upon them by the Gray enquiry. If she finds breaches of coronavirus law did take place, the Met will have serious questions to answer as to why they took no action, given their own records form part of the Gray enquiry. Dick has been backed into a corner and has no real alternative but to investigate.

Teflon Dick will avoid any repercussions as usual.

Says it all when Tories are saying a police investigation might save his bacon.

Looking in from the outside the MET have lacked good leadership for some time, this is just another case of it with some more egg on face.

News last night, opened up about yet another party, I forget second piece, then Russia/Ukraine, I get what Ray is saying at the top of the page, will another news piece on yet another party be really that newsworthy to start the news?? By all means report on it, but Russia/Ukraine has the potential to affect our everyday lives more than yet another party from the corrupt muppets.

The Downing Street press briefing has just said that any parts of the Gray enquiry which are not subject to further investigation by the police can be published when ready.

Two possible implications of Met action:

Johnson gets away with it as Met investigation stops Gray report and kick its far enough into the long grass than anger disapates.

or

Delay means that this is the spark for Tory backbenchers to mobilise, they can not longer say they are "waiting for Gray", so they now need to decide whtehr to stick or twist.

The cash for questions Met inquiry in 2007 lasted 16 months and resulted in no action.

My thoughts are that the Tories want Johnson in until March, we have opened up more after Covid, Spring, things looking brighter generally, Johnson and his baggage can be thrown out and the new PM/Cabinet start the new wave of waffle with the decks clear.
