As you say, they're hi-gain amps which are always going to have hiss issues - nothing that a noise gate won't sort out. The Peavey JSX has a built in noise gate to alleviate this so might be worth considering. Our guitarist has an EVH III 50w head and it sounds epic. Personally I prefer the Peavey 5150 which is what these amps are based on but they're super loud (120w) and I'd wager you'd never get it past 4 on the master volume and 6 on the gain knob.

After a LOT of research I decided on a PRS MT15 in the end (loud enough to compete with the other guitarist in the band!) but I'd love to have one of those EVH 50w heads one day - I used a 120w Peavey 5150+ once and it sounded awesome! But at my age, I need to consider my back! I have a Randall RG150 but it's a beast in weight as well as sound!

I've started re watching Michael Angelo Batio's tuitional stuff with a view to finally learning sweep picking. Boy, it's damn hard and the repetition of one arpeggio over and over is mind numbingly dull, but the rewards should be worth it in the end and I'm starting to see results in terms of speed and accuracy already.

I read through the whole of this thread and have found it very informative. I've been rediscovering guitar recently. I played a bit many years ago and then went on to play mainly bass in a few bands but never bothered with much of the in depth theory.

But over the last few months I've been trying to learn lead guitar and starting with the early stuff Chuck Berry 50s and rockabilly and really got back my love of guitars and playing. I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos and been concentrating on just basic pentatonic scales using a backing track to try to solo over and also learning some theory.

I'm not that great yet but a real lightbulb moment for me was when someone (Justinguitar) explained that the scale is like the alphabet and licks/riffs are like words and you have to then try to form sentences that form a language. I'm at the stage where I can do basic soloing but still got a lot to learn and need to learn a lot more tricks. Another light bulb moment was this video which concentrates on a couple of shapes and simplifies the pentatonic scale.

I've got an Epiphone SG Pro and recently bought an Epiphone Casino. I play mainly late at night so mostly play the SG unplugged as the Casino is quite loud even played accoustically. It's the first hollow body I've owned so didn't realise it would project like an acoustic.

Like Simon hammer I've also been using the Tonebridge app with an irig 2 and a spare iPhone. I absolutely love the sounds I get with this and the fact you can look up a particular artist or song and replicate that sound. It's a shame they no longer update it.

Sold for $937,500.00

I'm surprised, I thought it would be more. Doesn't even make it into the top ten most expensive.

Just ditched my valve amps and gone over to the dark side with a Helix LT together with an 8" headrush guitar speaker as a monitor (2000 watts can you believe !)
two guitars and bass all amp modelling through the PA so the overall sound is much clearer and defined which gives a better audience experience and easier for everyone in the band to hear themselves too. Glad I did it.

That looks like a serious bit of equipment GCRO.

I decided I'm selling my Epiphone SG Pro and I've got a 50s Classic Vibe Squier Tele (White Blonde) due to arrive tomorrow. I'm hoping it's a better guitar than the SG and all the reviews seem to praise it

Good move mate. Epiphone guitars just put me in a bad mood when I see one. If the Classic Vibe guitars are anything like the basses then you've certainly done the right thing. Rock on :bump:

I've got an Epi LP plus top pro and I've fallen out of love with it. There's nothing wrong with it per se but I'm just not feeling it anymore.

Last week I would have totally agreed with you.

Then a mate sent me some pics of some 60's Epiphones that he's using on a project at the moment. They belong to the singer from The Hives and they're like £5k a pop. But they're awesome.

So I had a look around and found this, and bought it on Tuesday this week

Image

It's a reissue of a 1966 Epiphone Wilshere, made in 2009 at Epiphone's factory in Indonesia. They were only about £350 new, and you can find them for £200 now.

You know what? It's bloody brilliant. I mean really brilliant. Light as a feather, really resonant, great bright/loud pickups, fantastic action.

I've got, I dunno, about 30 guitars. Gibsons from the 50s and 60s, some rare Rickenbackers, some custom made stuff...... this is the one I'm going to use next time I play.

So I've changed my mind about Epiphone.

I will make a caveat on my previous statement on Epiphones. The ones that are built in Japan are superb. The quality control and materials are of much higher quality than the Chinese / Indonesian / Korean made Epiphones.

Also, the Epiphone Thunderbirds that they're making now are much better than the ones they made years ago, much truer to the Gibson set up. I still don't like Thunderbirds though, had two and promptly sold them. The neck dive was horrendous.

Can anyone recommend the best company or way to send an electric guitar? Some companies won't quote or the price is absolutely ludicrous. Thanks!

If you mention any carrier on the guitar forums someone will come up with a horror story. The general consensus seems to be that UPS are the least bad, and if you book them via the reseller Interparcel then insurance is far cheaper than if you book direct.

Personally I've used DPD fairly often (probably about 20 times) because we have an account with them at work, and so far I haven't had any problems.

I once bought a second-hand acoustic guitar off EBAY.
The grade-A twat selling it didn't double-box,or even single-box it - he just put it in a bin liner and sellotaped it up and took it along to the Post Office!

It arrived totally unscathed :chin:

I always love how the estimates on guitar auctions are always incredibly undervalued.

I like DHL. I might be wrong but I think they are the only courier that properly cover musical instrument damage.
