Re: Next Labour Leader
Private Schools are clearly not charities and should not be treated like one. Labour are bang on the money with this one, which will have public support and tie the Tories in knots.
Labour seem to have got a lot smarter recently and the Tories are falling on their traps time and time again.

If families can't afford VAT on fees then why don't they cancel Netflix, stop eating avocados, buy less takeaways and work a little harder?
Re: Next Labour Leader
If Universities are registered as charities then that should absolutely change.SammyLeeWasOffside wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 10:35 am Universities next, another middle/upper class leg up.

The Tories will untie any knots by pointing out that fact that a number of Labour MP's and their offspring have also benefited from a private education.......

It appears that to be classed as a charity all they have to do is let a few students in at at reduced rate:E15Iron wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 10:05 am Private Schools are clearly not charities and should not be treated like one. Re: Next Labour Leader
No issue with anyone going to private school, that's their choice, that's not the matter at hand. The matter is having the state in effect paying 20% of the fees.delbert wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 11:07 am It appears that to be classed as a charity all they have to do is let a few students in at at reduced rate:

Re: Next Labour Leader
Wanting the privileged to pay their fare share is a very different scenario to use that tactic against than if Labour were (correctly) calling for private schools to be abolished.delbert wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 11:07 am It appears that to be classed as a charity all they have to do is let a few students in at at reduced rate:

Re: Next Labour Leader
Why should they be abolished? Is anyone calling for that. People can spend their money on anything they choose surelyDanny's Dyer Acting wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 12:21 pm Wanting the privileged to pay their fare share is a very different scenario to use that tactic against than if Labour were (correctly) calling for private schools to be abolished.

Re: Next Labour Leader
Or have Labour simply gone back to one of Corbyn's ideas , you know the ones that Starmer has been so busy trashing since becoming leader, and decided it actually is a better one than anything he ( Starmer) could come up with!E15Iron wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 10:05 am Private Schools are clearly not charities and should not be treated like one. Re: Next Labour Leader
I jest (slightly). But nobody has come up with a better way to fix the inequalities they cause in our system, maybe getting rid of them is the only option?SammyLeeWasOffside wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 12:35 pm Why should they be abolished? Re: Next Labour Leader
Well Corbyn's was to abolish them altogether. Labour is to cut the charitable status and ensure VAT is paid. A much different position. I personally don't agree with abolishing them, if people want to send their kids to private schools then they should have the choice to do so. However I do agree with the current Labour position of abolishing the charitable status and ensuring VAT is paid.ironsonthebrain wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 1:18 pm Or have Labour simply gone back to one of Corbyn's ideas , you know the ones that Starmer has been so busy trashing since becoming leader, and decided it actually is a better one than anything he ( Starmer) could come up with!

Re: Next Labour Leader
We could improve state education I guess. Burning the old school tie will only see something else used. In fact taking away the charitable bit could make the problem worse, make them even more exclusive.Danny's Dyer Acting wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 1:33 pm I jest (slightly). House of lords is easy the parties nominate who they want to go in.

Re: Next Labour Leader
When you think that the Chester by-election came about because of allegations of serious sexual mis-conduct by the sitting Labour MP, to see a record percentage vote for Labour and at the same time, the lowest Tory share of the vote in that city since 1832 is a little bit stunning ...

People find ways to justify their sides failings and moralise about the others. Its also how Johnson rose to power.

Re: Next Labour Leader
It won't be a landslide unless Scotland ditches the SNP. They will have a big group of people willing to abstain rather than vote with the Tories on issues though. Right now I would say a majority in the 30-40 range. 2 years down the line it will probably be a coalition.
