"The struggle within, now I understand,
Freedom begins when you get out of the cage you built"

Wide Awake by Lacuna Coil
(The most un-metal of all of their songs)

Written by Scottish-born Australian folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle made famous by The Fureys this is a great great song. :)

Well the sun now it shines on the green fields of France
There's a warm summer breeze it makes the red poppies dance
And look how the sun shines from under the clouds
There's no gas no barbed wire, there's no gun firing now

But here in this graveyard it's still no mans land
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
To a whole generation that were butchered and dammed

Well Willie Mc Bride I can't help wonder why
Do those that lie here know why they died
And did they believe when they answered the call
Did they really believe that this war would end wars

Well the sorrow the suffering the glory the pain
The killing the dying was all done in vain
For young Willy Mc Bride it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again

:D

Just, a little bit of heaven fell from out the sky one day
And nestled in the ocean in a spot so far away
And when the angels found it, sure it looked so sweet and fair
They said suppose we leave it, for it looks so peaceful there

So they sprinkled it with star dust just to make the shamrocks grow
'Tis the only place you'll find them no matter where you go
Then they dotted it with silver, to make it's lakes so grand
And when they had it finished sure they called it Ireland

Talking of Eric Bogle

And the band played Waltzing Matilda

Now when I was a young man, I carried me pack,
And I lived the free life of a rover
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback,
Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over.
Then in 1915, my country said "Son,
It's time you stopped rambling, there's work to be done".
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun,
And they marched me away to the war.
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As the ship pulled away from the quay
And amidst all the cheers, the flag-waving and tears,
We sailed off for Gallipoli.
And how well I remember that terrible day,
How our blood stained the sand and the water
And of how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay,
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter.
Johnny Turk he was waiting, he'd primed himself well
He showered us with bullets and he rained us with shell
And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to Australia.
But the band played Waltzing Matilda,
When we stopped to bury our slain.
We buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs
Then we started all over again.
And those that were left, well we tried to survive,
In that mad world of blood, death and fire
And for ten weary weeks, I kept myself alive
Though around me the corpses piled higher
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head
And when I woke up in me hospital bed,
And saw what it had done, well I wished I was dead
Never knew there was worse things than dying.
For I'll go no more waltzing Matilda
All around the green bush far and free
To hump tent and pegs, a man needs both legs
No more waltzing Matilda for me.
So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The legless, the armless, the blind, the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay,
I looked at the place where me legs used to be
And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve, to mourn, and to pity.
But the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
Then they turned all their faces away.
And so now every April, I sit on me porch,
And I watch the parade pass before me.
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march
Reviving old dreams of past glories
And the old men march slowly, old bones stiff and sore
They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask meself the same question.
But the band plays Waltzing Matilda
And the old men still answer the call,
But as year follows year, more old men disappear
Someday no one will march there at all.
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
And their ghosts may be heard as they march by that billabong
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?

Many, many versions of this but I always thought the Pogues made a pretty good fist of it.

A Day in the Life:

I read the news today oh, boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall

From GOODNIGHT SAIGON: Billy Joel

We had no home front, we had no soft soap
They sent us Playboy, they gave us Bob Hope
We dug in deep and shot on sight
And prayed to Jesus Christ with all of our might

We had no cameras to shoot the landscape
We passed the hash pipe and played our Doors tapes
And it was dark, so dark at night
And we held on to each other
like brother to brother
We promised our mothers we'd write

Remember Charlie, remember Baker
They left their childhood on every acre
And who was wrong? And who was right?
It didn't matter in the thick of the fight

We held the day in the palm of our hands
They ruled the night, and the night
Seemed to last as long as
six weeks on Parris Island
We held the coastline, they held the highlands
And they were sharp, as sharp as knives
They heard the hum of our motors
They counted the rotors
And waited for us to arrive

And we would all go down together..

Deutschmarks or Dollars
American Express will do nicely thank you
Let me loosen up your collar
Tell me, d'you wanna see me do the shimmy again?

Errr... no thanks Tina, I'll leave it.

The scary thing I've learnt today is that this song was written by Mark Knopfler and was originally intended to be a Dire Straits song, which never happened. Imagine Knopfler singing those lyrics and try not to shudder.

That's because most of their stuff is written like a nursery rime.

The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel

“In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
And cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains, he's still remains“

IIRC Knopfler used to play (and sing it) at one time, either with Dire Straits or solo.
