If I ever hear this brilliant song in public, I'm afraid that I loudly join in with the last two lines..Plashet Grove Pete wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 5:56 pm In a similar vein, I give you The Divine Comedy ...
"On the National Express, there's a jolly hostess
Selling crisps and tea
She'll provide you with drinks and theatrical winks
For a sky-high fee
Mini-Skirts were in style when she danced down the aisle
Back in sixty - three
But it's hard to get by when your arse is the size
Of a small country"

Re: Great lines in a song
Just bumping this thread, Most of you would never have heard of this guy but Liam Reilly a great singer songwriter from Ireland has just died,
he was a legend and a genius song writer, he was huge in Ireland and was recognised worldwide as a brilliant composer. He was the front man with Bagatelle for 40 years and I actually went on my first date with my wife of 40 years to their concert in Cork City hall on 25th April 1981.
Summer in Dublin was his best known hit but he penned many other great songs like Second Violin, Trump card, Raining in Paris, Flight of Earls and The Streets of New York. He also came second in the Eurovision song contest back when the songs actually mattered rather than the circus acts nowadays.
RIP Liam you were one of Ireland's finest.
He wrote this song after a night out in Dublin seeing the Boomtown Rats and everything that happened that night is in the lyrics which he wrote when he went home in two hours.

Re: Great lines in a song
No bother mate he was a great song writer,
I met him a few times after concerts he was going out with a neighbour of mine and she introduced us.
He even wished us a happy anniversary at one concert telling the whole crowd how we dated at a Bagatelle concert.
Because that concert in 1981 was our very first date Summer in Dublin became "our song "

Elvis Costello's 'Ship Building'
Brilliant lyrics and brilliantly performed by Robert Wyatt. A great anti war song and every line is subtle and beautifully crafted.
Is it worth it?
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy's birthday
It's just a rumor that was spread around town
By the women and children
Soon we'll be shipbuilding
Well I ask you
The boy said, "Dad they're going to take me to task
But I'll be back by Christmas
It's just a rumor that was spread around town
Somebody said that someone got filled in
For saying that people get killed in
The result of this shipbuilding
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls
It's just a rumor that was spread around town
A telegram or a picture postcard
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyard
And notifying the next of kin
Once again

Four hundred?
Yeah

But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?

"I'm not Jesus, though I have the same initials"
Dishes - by Pulp.
Everything Jarvis Cocker has written is pretty great, but that line and the meaning behind the song is absolutely sublime.

Re: Great lines in a song
We all know this guy from the Randy Newman song "Marie" right?
You looked like a princess the night we met
With your hair piled up high
I will never forget
I'm drunk right now baby
But I've got to be
Or I never could tell you
What you meant to me
I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie
I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie
You're the song
That the trees sing when the wind blows
You're a flower, you're a river, you're a rainbow
Sometimes I'm crazy
But I guess you know
And I'm weak and I'm lazy
And I've hurt you so
And I don't listen to a word you say
When you're in trouble I just turn away
I love you, I loved you, the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie
I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie
It's all the more affecting because the melody is one that will stir deep memories of the last time you heard it, even though you never have.

Re: Great lines in a song
The first 3 verses set the scene: the last 3 get me every time.
The Old Main Drag - The Pogues:
When I first came to London I was only sixteen
With a fiver in my pocket and my ole dancing bag
I went down to the dilly to check out the scene
And I soon ended up on the old main drag
There the he-males and the she-males paraded in style
And the old man with the money would flash you a smile
In the dark of an alley you'd work for a fiver
For a swift one off the wrist down on the old main drag
In the cold winter nights the old town it was chill
But there were boys in the cafes who'd give you cheap pills
If you didn't have the money you'd cajole or you'd beg
There was always lots of tuinol on the old main drag
One evening as I was lying down by Leicester Square
I was picked up by the coppers and kicked in the balls
Between the metal doors at Vine Street I was beaten and mauled
And they ruined my good looks for the old main drag
In the tube station the old ones who were on the way out
Would dribble and vomit and grovel and shout
And the coppers would come along and push them about
And I wished I could escape from the old main drag
And now I'm lying here I've had too much booze
I've been shat on and spat on and raped and abused
I know that I am dying and I wish I could beg
For some money to take me from the old main drag
