If I give up the seat I've been saving
To some elderly lady or man
Am I being a good boy
Am I your pride and joy
Mother please if your pleased say I am

And if while in the course of my duty
I perform an unfortunate take
Would you punish me so, unbelievably so
Never again will I make that mistake
This feeling inside me could never deny me
The right to be wrong if I choose
And this pleasure I get
From say winning a bet
Is to lose

When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy
Eating more than enough apple pies
Will I glance at my screen and see real human beings starve to death
Right in front of my eyes

Nothing old, nothing new, nothing ventured
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost,
Nothing further than proof nothing wilder than youth
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine
Nothing physically, recklessly, hopelessly blind
Nothing I couldn't say
Nothing why 'cause today
Nothing rhymed

And that's fine IOTB, each to their own and all that.
I guess it just comes down to what you prefer, the Art or the Science.

Give me a science guy to keep me well and keep me alive.
But, for me at least, I'd rather have an artist that makes me feel I'm alive.

I'm by the roadside with my thumb out
A car pulls up, and Bob's driving
So I climb in
We don't say a word

One of my idols, and I got to meet him a few year ago after a concert, I was blubbing of course because I had loved his music my entire life.

I told him I was a song writer as well and he asked me to send a tape of a few of my songs to his hotel, which I did the next day.

A few weeks later a hand written letter arrived to me from the man himself and he really liked my demos and gave me some pointers for the future.

Real gent and a real star imo. :)

We reject your hollow spectacle
We reject your hollow governance
We refuse to allow you to outsource our labour and capitalise our ideas - ideas and efforts
Our hearts and minds are our own
They belong to us.
They are not yours to privatise and monetise
We reject your so-called culture
We reject your spectacle
We reject your flat 2-dimensional touch phone simulation
We reject your lies
We refuse your bribes
We refuse to participate in this pale simulation of reality that you have created for us to consume
We embrace the real
We inhabit the now
This world is ours.

Funny I was thinking about "Bonaparte Shandy' the other day and what a good lyric that is

Squeeze, Cool for Cats

I kiss her for the first time and then I take her home

Aged 9, or so, I puzzled over that lyric.

Why, I asked myself, did he go to a nightclub (as the song attested), with a bone for a dog in his pocket?

Nicely written.

The Voyage

I am a sailor, you're my first mate
We signed on together, we coupled our fate
Hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail
For the hearts treasure, together we set sail

With no maps to guide us we steered our own course
Rode out the storms when the winds were gale force
Sat out the doldrums in patience and hope
Working together we learned how to cope

Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled water that keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us, we have our own crew

Together we're in this relationship
We built it with care to last the whole trip
Our true destination's not marked on any charts
We're navigating to the shores of the heart

Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled water that keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us, we have our own crew

Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled water that keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us, we have our own crew

This song was sung by Jennie's friend , Heather at the funeral of her 9 year old son , Gordon .

How she managed to get through it without bursting into tears is beyond me [ as everyone else was crying ] .

I've never been able to listen to that song since and I love Christy Moore .

My favourite [ though not a Moore original ] has to be ' The Reel In The Flickering Light ' , now that song does have some amazing lyrics .

Agreed. Genius. For me, his best is this:

In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to whoever
What it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that's tough"
"She stood him up"
"No point in us remaining"
"We may as well go home"
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play?
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God in His mercy
Who if He really does exist
Why did He desert me?
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that there are more hearts
Broken in the world that can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
Alone again, naturally
Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

At the risk of lowering the tone:

In a similar vein, I give you The Divine Comedy ...

"On the National Express, there's a jolly hostess
Selling crisps and tea
She'll provide you with drinks and theatrical winks
For a sky-high fee
Mini-Skirts were in style when she danced down the aisle
Back in sixty - three
But it's hard to get by when your arse is the size
Of a small country"

Try this :)

Two Hundred Year Old Alcoholic
Author: Liam Clancy

When I was eighty I started smoking
Took to drinking at eighty-five
At ninety I started courting
Thank God that I was alive

Ninety-five saw me in business
Determined to rake in a pile
At a hundred I made my first million
And I started living in style

CHORUS
Oh, it's never too late to start living
To get out and have some fun
The sun will be just as shiny in the morning
As the first day the world begun

Well I moved to an uptown penthouse
Used fifties to light my cigars
Developed a taste for fine champagne
Drove fast I-talian cars

But the doctor he give me a warning
And a lecture on right and wrong
If I didn't give up my sinful ways
I couldn't live very long
But I said to him...

CHORUS
Oh, it's never too late to start living
To get out and have some fun
The sun will be just as shiny in the morning
As the first day the world begun

Now I'm a two-hundred year old alcoholic
And the nicotine's caught up on me
But worst of all in this morning's mail
Got a suit for paternity
But I'm not really unhappy
'Cause maybe I'll have me a son
And his morning's will be just as shiny
As the first day the world begun

CHORUS
Oh, it's never too late to start living
To get out and have some fun
The sun will be just as shiny in the morning
As the first day the world begun

Never felt magic crazy as this,
Never saw the moon, knew the meaning of the sea,
Never held emotions in the palm of my hand
Or felt the breezes at the top of a tree.,
But now you're here, to brighten my Northern sky.

I've been a long time that I'm waiting,
Been a long time that I'm blown,
I've been a long time that I've wandered
Through the people I have known
But if you could, and you would, straighten my new minds eye.

Would you love me for my money,
Would you love me for my head
Would you love me in the winter
Would you love me when I'm dead
Oh, if you would and you could, come blow your horn on high.

I never felt magic crazy as this,
I never saw moons, knew the meaning of the sea,
I never felt emotion in the palm of my hand,
Or felt sweet breezes at the top of a tree,
But now you're here, to brighten my Northern sky.
