Texas salesman 'Mattress Mack' places $4.5 million in bets on Cincinnati Bengals to spring Super Bowl LVI upset
Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, the Houston furniture salesman known to place giant hedge bets, has done it again -- this time with the biggest single wager he's ever placed.
On Thursday, McIngvale drove across the Texas border into Louisiana, pulled over at a gas station, logged onto his mobile betting account with Caesars Sportsbook and placed $4.5 million in bets on the underdog Cincinnati Bengals at +170 odds to upset the favored Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI. If the Bengals spring the upset, the bet would net $7.7 million.
"I had to make like twenty $200,000 bets to make it work," McIngvale told ESPN on Thursday night. "But I want to thank Caesars for taking it."
McIngvale bet $3.46 million on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3.5 on last year's Super Bowl as part of a promotional giveaway at his store. The Buccaneers delivered with a convincing upset of the Kansas City Chiefs, but McIngvale's been on a cold streak recently. He lost $4.7 million in a week betting on football in January, highlighted by a $2.7 million money-line bet on Alabama in the national championship game, which Georgia won. The following week, McIngvale saw $2 million in futures bets he placed on the Patriots to win the Super Bowl go up in flames with a 47-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the playoffs.
"I've always said that a setback is just a setup for a comeback," McIngvale said.
he's been on the telly from the day he opened his store. jumps up at the end of the ad, pulls money out of his back pocket and says "Gallery Furniture - Saves You Money.."
to be fair to him (read somewhere it's the largest I think single owned, retail store in the world)
and when we had the huge floods he opened his store to people who were made homless and let people sleep on their beds and furniture (although I wouldn't have bought them afterward ) and he really is a generous guy.....
even so........

Re: NFL For Dummies
All but one Super Bowl in LA have been blowouts. Hope that doesn’t happen in this one.
This pregame has been the longest most obnoxious ordeals in NFL history.

Raised my eyebrows when the Bengals went for it on that fourth down. I know it was a yard but it was a risky thing to do on the first drive and on the halfway line. Now paid for it.

Dunno what that was like live, but I've just watched the highlights and that looked like a dreadful game

Re: NFL For Dummies
Wouldn't say it was dreadful. Not a classic but ok.
Rams started very well. Beckham was set to be the star until his knee went and that injury really slowed Rams who ran out of ideas against Bengals defense.
Bengals have a great all round side except O line and they couldn't move the ball enough.
Kupp stepped up to turn the game and was incredible.
The first 20 and last 5 was all about the Rams offense. The rest was mainly a defensive battle

Re: NFL For Dummies
The Beckham injury seemed to knock the stuffing out of us for a while, but we hung on in there, and we had the big game players to come up with the big game moments.
Seeing Odell in tears of joy at the end was wholesome stuff. Big Aaron too. Oh and Matthew Stafford take a bow. Over a decade in freezing Detroit going nowhere and you’ve now got your reward.
Last notable mention to 40 year old Andrew Whitworth. I’d imagine he’ll retire now!

Re: NFL For Dummies
Was happy for either team to win before the game, they are both a likeable bunch from my transatlantic neutral view.
I enjoyed it, some of the calls were dodgy. The non-pass interference that led to the Bengal's TD but the call at the end on 3rd and goal against the Bengal's was incredibly harsh I suppose they cancel each other out.
HT I though was good, could have done with a little more Eminem. I thought Mary J. Blige stole the show. Dr Dre been on the pies by the looks of it and was the weak link of the 'gang'. Was just getting into it and it stopped.

Re: NFL For Dummies
Came on to post the same. Stayed up to watch it like I do every year and as a neutral (Giants fan ) I really enjoyed it. Some questionable calls by by the officials in favour of Cincinnati were outweighed by dubious calls by Cincinnati and the Rams just about deserved it overall. More big plays made by their big players on the whole.

Re: NFL For Dummies
Late holding call was ridiculous - ruined the game. They wanted LA to win as they already had all the celebrations lined up and are trying to make a dent in what could be a massive market.

Re: NFL For Dummies
It was a weird one. It was close and had its moments, but it never really felt like it got going up to the intensity I wanted. The box scoremakes it look far better than it was.Kludgehammer wrote: ↑Mon Feb 14, 2022 8:27 am Dunno what that was like live, but I've just watched the highlights and that looked like a dreadful game

Re: NFL For Dummies
It certainly does have a certain sector of this country in a red faced tizzy. Can't say I know why. It was entertaining and it was clean. I guess it was in the wrong color?

It wasn't a make up call, but ended up being one, although with more severe repercussions.Ironing Board wrote: ↑Mon Feb 14, 2022 5:44 pm Late holding call was ridiculous - ruined the game. Re: NFL For Dummies
Looking forward to free agency and the draft. I’m really hoping the Giants go for Russell Wilson, he along with two early first round picks would instantly make us a play-off team in my opinion.

As a Ram, the only way is down (most likely).
Not sure we can get to the SB two years in a row, but it has to be the aim. Kupp, OBJ, Stafford and Donald all key. I'd take the play offs and see what happens all day.
