Probably about right. We have a really tough set of fixtures. Capable of making the SB again no doubt, when you have the likes of Donald and Kupp.

I assume that the total being a game and a half lower than last season is expectation of SuperBowl hangover. The division opponents haven't improved: SF has unproved QB, Seattle has no QB, drama in Arizona; also get Atlanta and Carolina at home. Some difficult games for sure (@GB, @KC, @TB and Buffalo at home) but going through game-by-game, outside an injury to Stafford, it is hard to see less than 11 wins.

Fair points however SF are a bit of a bogey team for us, otherwise I'd agree. We shall see.

D K Metcalf is negotiating a contract extension but just to remind you..

word coming out from ESPN

DeShawn Watson gets 6 games suspension. also settles another 3 court cases against him. I think that's around 22 or 23 cases settled.

I also think there's more maybe 2 or 3 left.

Given the Ray Rice example, and more recently the punishment MLB gave Trevor Bauer for his choice of recreational activities, there's going to be a sheetstorm of backlash about this. NFL is basically made of teflon, so not sure there will be much impact long-term, but there will be no shortage of public outrage on the airwaves and online for the time-being.

thing is though, and I have to google for confirmation that this year a new "judge" was brought in.

a woman.

and supposedly her word is final. not the NFL this time, unless they doctored the evidence submitted to her.

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/sports/ ... 5/?src=rss

Deshaun Watson has been suspended six games as a result of an NFL disciplinary hearing after he was accused of sexual misconduct by 24 massage therapists in Texas.

News of the decision broke Monday morning based on a recommendation made by former U.S. District Judge Sue Robinson, who oversaw a three-day hearing in late June over whether Watson’s actions violated the NFL Personal Conduct Policy.

Either the union or the league can appeal the six-game suspension, in which case commissioner Roger Goodell is authorized under the collective bargaining agreement to make the final decision. The union said on Sunday night that it would stand by the decision. The league has three days to decide whether to appeal and said Monday morning that it was reviewing the decision.

https://www.cleveland.com/court-justice ... -case.html

Who is Sue L. Robinson, the retired federal judge hearing the Deshaun Watson disciplinary case?

Robinson, who retired from the bench in 2017 and joined a law firm, was appointed as the league’s disciplinary officer earlier this year by the NFL and the players’ union. The hearings were to begin Tuesday. Robinson’s power in imposing discipline is limited, however.

She can recommend discipline in cases, but as long as she finds a player violated league policy and imposes a sanction, either side can appeal to Roger Goodell, the league’s commissioner, who will then have the ultimate say.

so it's basically her ruling on the length of the suspension so I'd find it hard to believe that women's rights group will have much of a leg to stand. I imagine though, that lots will complain.

the fact that he settled with loads (almost all of them) I imagine that they included a NDA and maybe they didn't all give evidence against him.

I honestly don't know but that's a hell of a "light sentence" imvho.

no wonder the Player's Association won't appeal.

The Judge also found that Watson lacked remorse and was less than candid:

For starters, one thing that seemed very significant is that Judge Robinson concluded, in the most tactful way possible, that Watson didn’t tell the truth when testifying. As noted at page 7, Watson declined to concede that he developed erections during massages, or that he inadvertently touched therapists with his penis. Judge Robinson wrote that he “categorically denied the allegations against him, including that he ever developed an erection during a massage.”

Then there’s this extremely important sentence: “It is difficult to give weight to a complete denial when weighed against the credible testimony of the investigators who interviewed the therapists and other third parties.”

In other words, Judge Robinson doesn’t believe him. She doesn’t believe him because the accounts from the accusers were, as explained in footnote 25 on page seven, “substantially corroborated” by “contemporaneous text messages and discussions with third parties after their interactions with Mr. Watson.” Also, as mentioned in footnote 26 on that same page, “some massage therapists who publicly supported Mr. Watson stated that he had become erect during sessions with them.”

Even though Sue Robinson's is referred to as "Judge", that's only because she is a retired Federal judge. Her capacity here is technically the NFL's "Disciplinary Officer" - as supposedly independent position created in 2020 as part of the most recent CBA. She is paid jointly by the league and the union. This is the first time a violation of the league's personal conduct policy has been reviewed using this process.

The 6 games is as much a recommendation as it is a finding. The decision of the Disciplinary Officer, as long as any discipline is imposed, can be disregarded by the Commissioner. Not that any is needed, but the report contains plenty of justification for an appeal. Almost like this was a trial balloon to see where public sentiment lies in regards to a very light sentence. :chin:

Elsewhere in the NFL disciplinary chronicles:

The NFL punished the Miami Dolphins by stripping them of their 2023 first-round draft pick and fining billionaire owner Stephen Ross $1.5 million for tampering with future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady and former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton.

The Dolphins’ punishment is the result of a six-month investigation that also determined that the team did not inadvertently lose games during the 2019-2020 season as alleged by former head coach Brian Flores.

“The investigators found tampering violations of unprecedented scope and severity,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement. “I know of no prior instance of a team violating the prohibition on tampering with both a head coach and star player, to the potential detriment of multiple other clubs, over a period of several years. Similarly, I know of no prior instance in which ownership was so directly involved in the violations.”

NFL Appeals Punishment of Texans-Ex Deshaun Watson; Longer Suspension Coming?

The NFL is filling an appeal of this week's suggested six-game suspension of former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

HOUSTON - The NFL has officially filed an appeal of the punishment of former Houston Texans and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson was suspended six games without pay on Monday by former federal judge Sue L. Robinson for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

The league will likely seek a longer suspension.

"The NFL notified the NFLPA that it will appeal Judge Robinson's disciplinary decision and filed its brief this afternoon," NFL league representative Brian McCarthy said in a statement released Wednesday. "Commissioner Roger Goodell will determine who will hear the appeal."

It's actually worse. They also found that Ross actually told Brian Flores to tank, but they say he didn't mean it. So, is this punishment really for that, or do we take it at face value?

Also pathetic is that, unlike other US sports teams who are found guilty of tampering, in this case it wasn't even done successfully. Dolphins didn't get their targets but are punished for their crimes nonetheless. Yes, trying to break the law and failing is still breaking the law. That's a lesson soon to be applied elsewhere stateside.. :eyes:

interesting analysis from a local radio KILT 610 Houston, the flagship station for Texans games.

What Happens Now With Deshaun Watson's Suspension?

However, legal experts have pointed out that it will be far more difficult for Watson to get an injunction from the courts that will allow him to play to start the season in 2022.

In a nutshell, here are the main reasons that Watson, unlike Brady and Elliott, will likely have to take his medicine and serve his time, even if he does sue the league in federal court:
