Need some advice from the growing collective.

Our allotment plots will be given permission to put a greenhouse on next week. However, we're only allowed polycarbonate as glazing and mine is ready to go up

Our site can get very windy and i'm obviously concerned about losing polycarb panels. I'm going to glue each one in with silicon (exterior grade) but not sure that'll be good enough.

Thought about putting a strong wire over them (it's an aluminium frame so can be drilled) or finding a way to hold them with battoning.

Any suggestions ?

I've no solutions, but a couple of thoughts...

The GH will be pretty solid when it's all closed up, it's when either the door or windows are open that I've always had problems, and I can't (off the top of my head) figure how you'd get round that with a wire covering. Having said that, the square pattern reinforcing stuff for concrete might work for the sides at least.

Still thinking.. My inclination would be to get some of the windbreak netting( any landscape suppliers) and put it 10 or 12 ft on the windward side, it'd help all the allotment at the same time.

Jevs, I’d start by making sure that thing is firmly bolted to a concrete base or something similar. I could never manage to keep anything like that on my plot, as the wind hammers through the open space in an allotment.

I’d echo Tenbury’s sentiment in that some sort of a windbreak might be a decent solution. Planting perennial fruiting bushes that get a bit of height to them might give you some screening from the wind.

Good luck.

I have half-a-dozen, one-year-old Asparagus plants indebted to you APD. Lo and behold, since your reply they have indeed returned to (half) life.

I knew they’d be back. They are surprisingly hardy.

And for any asparagus growers with plants of an appropriate age, don’t be too greedy. Crop until mid-summers night and then leave them to do their thing. That’ll make sure there’s enough growth to sustain the roots for next years crop.

Each to his own, that's a bit too long for me. Presuming you take the first cuts @3yrs old, I'd only cut for a month, subsequent years increase to a max of 2 months.

[presuming UTJ'S plants are potted, cos I think he's grown them from seed, nows a good time to plant them in their final spot]

Nothing to do with me, but I recommend Asparagus lovers. com It's packed with interesting stuff :newthumb:

Yes sir... they're about 11 months old from seed now. Planted 16, got six remaining (I think).

Thi King abt getting my main crop seed potatoes on next weekend Easter what are peoples thoughts too early ?
I'm in the south West it's usually mild and damp .
My onions/ leeks planted in Nov are shooting away.
Bunged loads of the coffee dregs from my local coffee shop on there it seems to help as did spooning of the onions last year.

They should be fine RS, as long as you fleece them when a frost is expected.

Tomorrow is our local spring flower show. Been out in the pi$$ing rain and gale force winds trying to find suitable flowers daffoldils that haven't been battered by the weather of partially eaten by slugs. After planting approx 350,000 daffodil bulbs over the past 15 years, that was a very hard task.
But I think we got 11 varieties, 5 stems of each (3 for showing, 2 as back ups). One thing though, my car and kitchen smell absolutely divine.

I've never shown any produce before so this is all very new to me. I'll let you know how I get on

Got my tomato seeds in today. Weather has been so bad for weeks that I’m well behind schedule. I’m growing Sweet Million that I had some good success with last year.

Should be a good week for seeding. Sunny skies predicted for the next three days. Onions, carrots and peas, here we come!
